“It is with great pleasure that I write on behalf of Jessica Hall, a dedicated career advisor, business relationship manager, supervisor, mentor, colleague and friend. Jessica and I worked collaboratively together for 4.5 years, and during that time, Jessica led the way toward creating a very successful, strategic and intentional career readiness program at Ohio Dominican University. Through Jessica’s effective guidance, leadership, and innovative thinking, our career program at ODU grew into a thriving, student-success driven “college to career” initiative all around campus, moving our employment outcomes rate from 79% in 2016 to 92% in 2019. As a teammate, Jessica led our team to work as a “well-oiled” machine, always moving us forward towards new and improved career-related initiatives, finding better ways of obtaining internships and employment opportunities for our students and alumni, and driven towards creating new opportunities to engage with and build upon new and existing business partnerships. As a career advisor, Jessica is a caring and open-minded individual who always makes time for those in need or others who seek out her wisdom and advice. Not a day in 4 years went by when Jessica’s office was not busy with past or present students seeking out her sage advice or encouragement, and Jessica was always there, making time to listen and provide practical yet sound advice on pathways towards career readiness and success. Jessica is a visionary, dedicated towards creating successful career-based programming that stimulates student learning, engages strategic business partnerships, develops faculty-wide engagement, and creates successful employment outcomes for collegiate graduates. She has a keen eye for seeing the “whole picture” and utilizes this ability effectively to maximize successful career development initiatives. It was a pleasure having Jessica Hall as my supervisor. She helped me to grow and evolve as a collegiate career advisor, gave me the opportunity to grow in my understanding and implementation of college readiness tasks among college students, and allowed me the freedom to utilize my creative ideas to enhance the services provided to the students at Ohio Dominican University. I will always be grateful to her for this gift, and wish her much happiness and success in all her future endeavors. She is truly someone who will make a meaningful difference to any college, university of organization that she works for, and I give her my highest recommendation. ”

You’re an employee who’s feeling stuck in your career. What can a career counselor do to help you?
If you attended a 2 or 4 year college you can usually still work with the college career center, even as an alum. Another great place to find career support is in your local/county job center. There are even many nonprofits that provide career and workforce development like, jewish family services, the united way, goodwill, the urban league and more!

You're a recent graduate looking for work. How can you make yourself stand out from the crowd?
While it is important to practice common interview questions (typically behavioral based Qs), it is even more important to know your stories. Prepare 6-8 STAR stories about 1-3=top three strengths (one story for each), a leadership story, a challenge story (team and/or person/devision), your greatest accomplishment. Usually your greatest successes and yoyr biggest failure produce the best stories. If you know yourself + research company and review the job description you shoukd be able to effectively answer any interview question that comes your way!
