My old industry (mortgage/default servicing) meets the one I left it for (tech/data). So many layers here. The human one is the hardest: Someone clearly goofed. Trust me, they likely feel awful, and are are probably quite spooked. As a data leader, I’d hope ICE’s tech/data leadership supports their team - it’s far too easy, and quite counterproductive, to play scapegoat here. You can’t unsend 600,000 messages any more than you can unring a bell. Instead, the goal ought to be learning. ✅ What controls exist in prod, and what can/should be changed to limit the blast radius when there’s a mistake? ✅ What QA policies and procedures exist? If formal QA and UAT is missing…well, that’s a problem. ✅ In the SDLC, how do things get promoted to prod? Is there a defined path with senior technical review, particularly for customer-facing releases? ✅ Review data access controls, particularly for production, hewing to a “least privileges” slant - and ensure down-prod environments are scrubbing/obfuscating data (PII, email addresses, etc). ✅ Review data architecture. Data should be segmented by age, access rights, business use cases, etc. For example, inactive/prior customer data should age out into a colder tier. That’s just a start, but ICE Mortgage Technology can use this incident as an opportunity to get better (and also become more data literate). Or, it can blame a developer or contractor…and feign surprise the next time something like this happens. #dataarchitecture #dataarchitect #dataleadership
