Long time reader, first time writer... During my morning run today, I started thinking about the limitless amounts of materials have been written on leadership theory and execution. I love to read and I've consumed what I consider to be a significant portion of what's out there.  It occurred to me that there is a key premise that may govern most leadership traits... two divergent foundational elements upon which most leadership traits and approaches are founded.  On one hand, there are leaders who believe they have the answers and just need to convince enough people (or convince the right people). They believe that if everyone just followed their advice, implemented their plans, and did what they were told, ultimate success will be inevitable. On the other hand, there are leaders who believe the answers lie within the collective knowledge and experience of their teams and base their approach on fostering an environment where they can discover the best path forward by harnessing their team's collective skills, knowledge and ideas. While I strive to be the latter, there are certainly times in my career where I've had to use both approaches. Maybe the most important thing is to know the difference, know which one I gravitate towards, and know the shortcomings of each so that I can address the gaps along the way.

“Those people who think they know everything are a great annoyance to those of us who do.” ― Isaac Asimov I like to think that my leadership style reflects a positive outlook on life, and my belief that humor plays an important part in maintaining a strong, team-oriented working environment. This approach to work and life has served me well, but let’s be real – sometimes I have to squint pretty hard to see the positive or funny side of things during a workday – or struggle to erase the memory of that stressful meeting. But at least I can take solace in the fact that, as this Fast Company article points out, humans are hard wired to focus on negative - it’s a survival thing. As a result, we are naturally inclined to dwell on the bad things that happened to us during the day, even if we had way more positive experiences. The good news that you can take away from the article (and hopefully dwell on) is that there are measures you can take to become less negative, such as writing down your thoughts, pausing to think before you say something negative our loud (tough one for me – my thoughts always take the express lane (pun intended)), and putting things in perspective. I was able to put this approach into practice recently. Our Senior Leadership team was in an intense all-day meetings that featured a number of tough, stressful discussions. At one point the stress level was raised even more when we learned that the following Friday would feature a performance review for all of us with the CEO and CHRO. This seemed like a good time to lighten the mood, so I said, "Great, I need to be on my best behavior just till then!" Without missing a beat my boss deadpanned, "Too late!" I laughed but had this gnawing thought that maybe he wasn’t joking. But then I told myself, I’m going to assume that nothing I do from now until Friday can possibly change their mind about how brilliant and wonderful I’ve been. Besides, nothing will go wrong during the week, because by pure coincidence, I will be locked in my office taking that week-long training course on positivity that I just remembered to sign up for… #leaderdevelopment #moderITleader #humoratwork   Rusty Patel
