On this #WellbeingWednesday, let's discuss #financialwellbeing and SHRM report on 401(k) loans. In Q1 2024, employees began the year strong with higher retirement account balances and contribution rates. However, driven by financial stress and the high costs of living, some participants are still withdrawing money from their accounts. The average 401(k) loan per participant increased by over 10% from Q4 2023 to $9,140. While a 401(k) loan may provide easy access to funds, it comes with drawbacks that can impact your retirement savings goals: - Lost Growth Potential - Missed Investment Opportunities - Double Taxation - Potential Tax Penalties - Employment Risk My personal bias is this: vendors suggest that a 401(k) loan is an opportunity to “borrow from yourself” but I’m wary of borrowing against my future. When you borrow from your 401(k), you're essentially withdrawing money that could have been growing tax-deferred through compounding. This interruption in growth can make it more challenging to reach your retirement targets, even if you faithfully repay the loan. It is inevitable there will be a day I either won’t want to work, or can’t, so why would I jeopardize my financial wellbeing when there are other loan alternatives like; personal loans, home equity loans, family/friends or employee loan programs. Remember, being aware of your savings and setting smart savings goals is crucial for your financial wellbeing. Not surprising, healthcare jobs are some of the most in demand jobs across the nation. With the storage of Total Rewards and Compensation Managers/Directors for healthcare systems many are turning to hiring TR/Compensation leaders who have not worked in the healthcare industry. Procedural justice is what employees consider the fairness factor, as well as methods that will buffer long term impact of downsizing. It can lead to optimism about long term impact, dampening impact of short term disappointment.

The Biden-Harris Administration has finalized a new rule effective from July 1, 2024, raising the salary threshold for overtime eligibility to $43,888 annually. This will also include a further increase to $58,656 by 2025. This rule is set to expand overtime protections to millions of lower-paid salaried workers.
