“Jennifer is one of those rare leaders that you come across and never forget. She is the type of leader that I aspire to be: caring, full of empathy, and a fearless leader. I first met Jennifer at a Society of Women Engineer's Conference and heard her speak about leadership derailers and barriers that can prevent successful engineers from being executives. During the talk, she made me realize how I was doing certain things incorrectly (e.g. being the expert) that were preventing me from getting into a senior leadership role in the future. I was able to reflect on my actions and create a plan to tackle those derailers that were standing in my leadership path as a result from that presentation. In addition, after hearing her talk, I invited her to be a speaker for our Professional Development group for our MBA students at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign as I thought her presentation could extend beyond engineering and be applicable in the business world. Jennifer kindly volunteered her time to present to our students and shared her wisdom and challenges that she faces as an executive to help prepare those of us that are interested in following the same path.”

What are the best team performance metrics to identify areas for process improvement?
Output metrics are not enough because they don't give you a chance to actually fix the problem before the output is delivered. Ideally, you should identify leading KPIs for each of your metrics so your team has a chance to address the "defect." For example, in a business process a potential defect could be late completion. A leading indicator could be the time at which an early step is completed. When that metric is showing late, the process could move that WIP to an accelerated process to ensure on-time delivery.

How can you choose the right lean manufacturing tools and techniques for your business?
To assess your current state: 1) Clearly define the process you want to evaluate, where it begins and ends. What is in scope? What is out of scope? 2) Identify the customers of the process and what is the value the process provides for them (i.e. why does the process exist?). 3) Start with a SIPOC (suppliers, inputs, process, outputs, customers) to understand what is happening at a high level and determine where you need to deep dive. 4) Collect existing information including SOPs, KPI or performance data, customer feedback, quality data etc. 5) Create a lower level process map and enrich with the additional data. 6) Identify bottlenecks, waste, painpoints, and opportunities.

How do you build trust with your team?
I have engrained gratitude and learning into our team culture by: 1) Recognition during team calls: It's a chance for me to recognize specific and recent contributions and for the team to recognize each other. 2) Project highlights: At the end of each project, the team prepares a one-pager that they can share during team calls. It shows their great work and allows the org to know more about what is going on in other teams. 3) An hour of learning per week: I challenge my team to spend an hour a week investing in themselves, building a new skill or learning about something new. I also talk about what book I'm reading and share webinars I'm planning on attending.
