Activities and Societies: Sigma Nu Fraternity; Association of American Geographers (AAG)

I majored in an environmental / science field and took electives in GIS and Cartography because of my background and interest in mapping. This education program combined with my Navy navigation background led me to my career in Geographic Information Systems (GIS); which, for a significant number of years, has been devoted to applying GIS solutions to solve environmental related issues.

The Texas General Land Office (GLO) administers the federal Community Development Block Grant Disaster Recovery Program for the State of Texas. In 2013, the GLO entered into an agreement with the Gulf Coast Community Preservation and Recovery District (GCCPRD), who hired Dannenbaum Engineering Corporation to lead a multidiscipline team to conduct a Storm Surge Suppression Study, which includes a technical, scientific based effort to investigate opportunities to alleviate the vulnerability of the upper Texas coast to storm surge and flooding in Brazoria, Harris, Galveston, Chambers, Jefferson and Orange counties. This study provides the GCCPRD opportunity to work collaboratively with federal, state, local, and public and private institutions to develop a plan that meets the needs of the region and the nation. The team utilizes geospatial technologies to model and analyze protective alternatives and the results are presented to the public through an HTML5 and JavaScript application utilizing a GitHub project called “CMV – The Configurable Map Viewer”. The CMV is built on an Esri ArcGIS Server and SQL Server platform utilizing Esri Basemaps and was chosen as the map viewer template due to its modular design that allows easy custom tailoring to meet the specific needs of the study.

GCCPRD - Dannenbaum (Jeff Scarborough, Chris Sallese, Tony Duerkop, Ryan Supak)

During Phase 1 of the Storm Surge Suppression Study, the study team compiled over 100 geospatial files from various regional, state, and federal databases. This information is summarized and available online for public review at the GCCPRD Geospatial Web Portal and the Data Library. These tools share the information gathered during all phases of the study and will be updated for stakeholders as further information is available.
