This is really exciting for the RIA world as it introduces a new investor community with deep pockets. Many old-world money managers (Putnam, Janus, DFA etc.) have been in net redemptions for years. I just listened to an industry podcast in which the host and guest mentioned that advisors who charge based on AUM have no incentive to encourage clients to spend. On the one hand, sure: the less a client spends, the more assets (to be managed) are retained, the higher the advisor fee. The usual (and valid!) criticism. On the other hand, you know what DOES incentivize the advisor to encourage clients to spend? Client loyalty and retention. Spending (on the right stuff) creates clients who are happier, more fulfilled, and who have YOU to thank for it.
