Happy Monday! Here we go, a new week, new searches, new applications, new networking calls, new connections, follow ups and some interviews mixed in there as well. I know I'm doing what I need to do because as my friends and network have sent me jobs to apply for...I'm seeing that I've already applied to almost all of them! I'm excited about the calls scheduled for this week and what may come of them. To my fellow #OpenToWork connections, don't give up! I know the processes are driving us nuts... the application questions don't feel meaningful or relevant, every role you apply for has over 100 candidates even after only 8 min (yes, this happened to me last night), call backs are slow and even decline emails are coming in slow, but, keep the faith, keep doing the work. ALL WILL WORK OUT. We as candidates need to recognize that recruiters are being inundated with overwhelming responses to posts, messages, calls, etc. from us and our recruiters should recognize that we just want the opportunity to share our experience and tell our story. Everyone is doing the best they can. To my fellow #TalentAcquistionLeaders and #Recruiters, now is the time to be extra compassionate and extra human, I know you typically like to go and find your own candidates, but, take a good look at the applicants with just as much hunt in you as your search and network, we are eager and there is so much great talent out there! We all (on both sides) should be treating each other the way we would want to be treated if in the same position. Hey all... JOB OPPORTUNITY !! mini story included_ 2 weeks ago I posted for this role and we made it through interviews in 1 week. I hate dangling 'speed' in front of people bc I know how frustrated people are (this market sucks!), but this truly was a special, refined process. ⚒ Took the brief > presented a stand-out candidate > interviewed over 5 business days > offer! 🙀 It was wild but in the best way! A dream for a great recruiting partnership. But also a > 🎢. And as things go, it wasn't the right timing for this particular candidate. That's okay! 🥁 That means the role is still open, and I gotta fill it. This client has been interviewing for a couple of months, and by now, knows exactly what they are looking for, and are ready to hire yesterday. So here is what we learned we really need from this most recent interview round: 🌟 🌟 🌟 Have you worked at a startup? Have you worked for a big company? Are you in the Bay Area (able to get to San Mateo 2x/wk for jam sessions)? Can you get down with being an IC for 6-12 months and want to/have experience building a team? Amazon is requiring a 5-day RTO starting January 2025. Agree or disagree with the reasoning, it's happening, and it will be felt across #tech. Credit to Amazon, they interview and hire fantastic people, they also fire very well and move people out at a rapid pace, but the average tenure is less than 1.5 years for full-time tech employees. Most Amazonians will be faced with a difficult choice in the next few months and will have to put a real price tag on the tradeoff between the convenience and productivity of #remotework versus everything we collectively despise about in-office work: The commute and the cost associated, time wasted in traffic, parking, distractions near your desk, water-cooler small talk, still on Zoom calls daily, and most importantly, time lost with your family/kids. You either stay and recommit to the status quo of Pre-covid19 or you begin exploring external options, unlocking those golden handcuffs, and targeting remote-first opportunities, likely to make significantly less in TC. At the L6 level, that could mean up to 50% less in Total Comp at all but a handful of Top Tech Companies. Interesting to see how this shakes out and impacts the larger tech market but in the meantime, I'm hiring #engineers @ Sumo Logic, and all of these roles are open to 100% remote. Tech hiring isn’t dead—it’s sober. The frenzy has cooled, the FOMO-driven hires have slowed, and we’re left with a more mature industry. The strongest tech talent will still have opportunities, but they’ll have to adapt. Specialization is key, and so is the ability to demonstrate real value, not just potential. Do you have upcoming #SDE interview scheduled at #Amazon? This post is for you. Our technical interviews typically require you to perform #coding and system design white boarding exercises. #Invention is in our DNA & technology is the fundamental tool we wield to evolve & improve every aspect of the experience we provide our customers. When reviewing the below topics, keep the customer top of mind. ⭐ Programming Language: We do not require that you know any specific programming language before interviewing for a tech position. However, familiarity with a prominent language is generally a prerequisite for success. You should be familiar with the syntax of languages such as C, C++, C++14, C#, Go, Java7, Java8, JavaScript, Kotlin, Objective-C, PyPy2, PyPy3, Python2, Python3, Ruby, Scala and Swift. You should also know some of the languages’ nuances, such as how memory management works, or the most commonly used collections, libraries, etc. ⭐ Data Structure & Algorithms: Most of the work we do involves storing and providing access to data in efficient ways. This requires a strong background in data structures. You’ll need to understand the inner workings of common data structures & be able to compare & contrast their usage in various applications. You will be expected to know the runtimes for common operations as well as how they use memory. Your interview will not be focused on rote memorization of algorithms. However, having a good understanding of the most common algorithms will likely make solving some of the questions a lot easier. Consider reviewing common algorithms such as traversals, divide and conquer, breadth-first search vs. depth-first search & understand the tradeoffs for each. Knowing the runtimes, theoretical limitations, and basic implementation strategies of different classes of algorithms is more important than memorizing the specific details of any given algorithm. ⭐ #Coding (This is your chance to show off your coding ability 😎): The most important thing a SDE does at Amazon is write scalable, robust, and well-tested code. These are the main evaluation criteria for your code. Make sure that you check for edge cases and validate that no bad input can slip through. Expect to be asked to write syntactically correct code—no pseudo code. If you feel a bit rusty coding without an IDE or coding in a specific language, it’s a good idea to dust off the cobwebs & get comfortable coding with a pen & paper. ⭐ #Design: Good design is paramount to extensible, bug-free, long-lived code. We know it’s possible to solve any given software problem in almost limitless ways, but when software needs to be extensible and maintainable, good software design is critical to success. One way to build lasting software is to use object-oriented design best practices.
