My second attempt to convert text-based blogs into engaging podcasts using AI. Today's topic, traditional contrast calculation vs APCA, for WCAG guideline 1.4.3, sufficient contrast. A quick recap: we need a contrast ratio of 4.5:1 for text and 3:1 for large text. Traditionally, the contrast is calculated using #luminance values, which conflicts with how human #eyes perceive color. APCA attempts to address this issue by considering the color pairing and font weights. I had the pleasure of meeting Rahul Bhavariya this week to talk about design and share industry ideas.We had extensive discussions about portfolio designs compared to actual ground reality in operations. Key takeaway: Portfolio expectations often don’t align with performance standards in many organizations—especially outside of large UX-focused or design-focused companies. We also discussed navigating stakeholder relationships in gathering requirements and dealing with various issues. Storytelling is Revolutionizing UX Design Vivek Raju's talk, “User-Centric to Story-Centric: Rethinking the Design Process,” brilliantly highlighted how moving beyond traditional user-centered design to a story-driven approach can create more engaging, intuitive, and effective experiences. The idea? Treat the user like the hero of a story, and the design becomes a narrative that guides them seamlessly through their journey. I'm hearing a lot of pain and confusion from a lot of designers and technologists and other folks trying to navigate jobs in these times. You as an individual worker (or as a customer or user of the products of design and technology) will never be valued for your own sake by an organization striving to maximize shareholder value. Collective action is the only way to counter this mandate and increase the cost of unethical, inhumane, or otherwise unreasonable practices. Sometimes this means working together more or less formally to influence policy and regulation, sometimes this means unionization. Asking nicely isn't going to do it. Nor is throwing your peers under the bus. If you need a pep talk (only $9):

This episode of the Finding Our Way podcast articulates, with such clarity, what’s been on my mind about the value proposition of design as a function. A business could leverage creating a stellar user experience as a strategic lever to succeed in the market, or NOT. The latter is totally acceptable where designers primarily focus on production tasks (like UI designs) in an org that prioritizes churning out features. Yet, it’s a bitter pill to swallow for many designers. They feel disgruntled and get exhausted speaking to the deaf ears about how great an outcome design can bring to the table and how influential they could be outside of Figma. This podcast talks about how many designer leaders are struggling to deal with this reality. As someone who is not in a leadership position, I feel the struggle too. But if I were to stay positive and constructive while prioritizing my mental sanity, these would be some options to consider. - Get hired by a company that REALLY values design (think Airbnb, Linear) - Be extremely good at your craft and find fulfillment in it, regardless of its direct impact on the bottom line—as long as you remain employed 🤷🏻‍♀️ - Elbow your way into cross-functional discussions as much as possible, at least within your team, to find opportunities to demonstrate what you can do outside of Figma. This year at the UXIndia conference, was a beyond special experience, since I attended it as a speaker! I met many amazing people, who were at different stages of their design careers, and got the chance to listen to some amazing talks on AI, sustainability, service design, design leadership, and so much more! My topic was 'How emotional design cures experience'. It was a 15-minute talk on understanding emotional design, its importance, how to leverage user's emotions, and how we use this in our daily lives as a designer. The Struggle of Landing a UX Design Job: 🥲 Breaking into the field of UX design can feel like an uphill battle for many aspiring designers. Despite having a passion for design, a well-crafted portfolio, and a strong educational background, the path to landing that first job is often riddled with challenges. Many begin their UX journey with excitement, learning the tools of the trade—Figma, Adobe XD, and Sketch—building projects that showcase their skills in creating user-friendly interfaces. They pour countless hours into perfecting case studies, researching best practices, and designing innovative solutions to real-world problems. But even with these efforts, the job market can be unforgiving. Job postings often seem to demand more than an entry-level designer can offer—years of experience, expertise in specific tools, or industry knowledge that only seasoned professionals possess. The "3-5 years of experience" requirement can be a constant roadblock for those just starting out, creating a sense of inadequacy despite their potential. Sending out countless applications, tweaking resumes, and crafting personalized cover letters becomes a daily routine. The silence that follows, or the occasional rejection, can be demoralizing. The question many ask themselves is, "How do I stand out in such a competitive field?" For some, freelance projects or internships offer a way to gain more experience and bolster their portfolios. These smaller gigs help hone their skills but don’t always lead to full-time opportunities. And while feedback from peers and mentors can be encouraging, the lack of a breakthrough moment still weighs heavily. Yet, amidst the struggle, there’s growth. Each rejection is a lesson, each design iteration a step closer to mastery. The frustration fuels perseverance, pushing aspiring UX designers to refine their craft, learn new skills, and stay adaptable in an ever-evolving industry. Eventually, for those who keep going, a door opens. Whether it’s a response from a company intrigued by a portfolio, a connection made at a networking event, or a freelance gig that grows into something more, the persistence pays off. While the struggle to land that first UX design job is real, it shapes a designer into someone resilient, prepared for the challenges ahead, and more confident in their ability to create meaningful, user-centered experiences.
