Savannah City Council discussed future options for the Civic Center site, focusing on three proposals presented by City Manager Jay Melder. The council will decide on June 27 between: Renovating the entire complex (MLK Arena and Johnny Mercer Theatre) at a cost of $135-$165 million. Demolishing the complex to restore the original city grid and building a new theater downtown for $130-$160 million. Demolishing the arena, renovating the Mercer Theatre, and partially restoring the city grid. Melder was tasked with detailing timelines for each option and incorporating council feedback on equity. Council members expressed the need for clear timelines and practicality, with some favoring full renovation or complete demolition for redevelopment. No definitive endorsements were made, though support for preserving the Mercer Theatre was noted. The importance of aviation to a community’s economy and overall quality of life can never be overstated. So once again, we’re helping spread the news. This spring, the Virginia Department of Aviation and Virginia Airport Operators Council are teaming up to produce new messaging that highlights how our industry benefits residents, visitors and businesses in the Commonwealth – and beyond. Our own Mark Perryman, Assoc. AIA was among those whose remarks will be featured once the project is completed. Douglas L. Smith of the Hampton Roads Alliance also discussed aviation’s importance to business retention and recruitment, while Stephen Ballard of S.B. Ballard Construction Co. shared how corporate aircraft based at ORF enable his Virginia Beach-based company to manage construction projects more efficiently at sites across this state and in other states. All three emphasized how airports large and small connect industries and people on a daily basis. Special thanks to Signature Aviation for its help with ORF’s portion of the interview process. While its numbers are due for an update, the Federal Aviation Administration reports civil aviation in Virginia alone produced more than $9 billion in economic output and supported nearly 54,000 direct jobs in calendar 2020; across the United States, those figures were $535 billion in economic activity and more than 2.5 million jobs. Keep in mind, those figures have undoubtedly increased in a stronger post-pandemic travel environment. Beyond dollars and jobs, air travel connects us with experiences, people and newly created memories. We’re privileged to play a small role in this critical industry’s ongoing success and support efforts to raise awareness of its global significance.
