Heard the city of LA's Summit about fixing the film business didn't go well. Lots of word salad, not a lot of solutions. Here are some easy fixes that will help us in CA pivot towards the future without costing a dime, California Film Commission: Remove the barriers to entry. Right now filmmakers need 60% of thier budget banked before applying. This means any project debt financing first money in can't apply. Any project that hasn't cash-flowed over half of their budget can't even apply. This is virtually every Indie production that isn't backed by a hedgefund or large angel investor. Create a new tier for Low Budget work: under 2 million dollars. Let the Studio movies come in and gobble up the 3+ million funds with a handful of projects. Keep your studio bosses happy, while providing a platform for new voices, new business models, and true film differeniation. Open up Tax Credit qualificaition to ATL workers. This might chase away the George Clooney's of the world, but celebrity isn't what it once was. Now the star is the film itself, the brand, the IP. Have more hits shot in CA, and the needle will move.

The producers of Servant contacted our team at The Garage Motion Control to help them put together a shot for the final scene of the series finale. SPOILER ALERT – if you haven’t seen the show and don’t want the ending ruined, stop reading now! Also, the final video sequence at the end of this post is quite graphic, so if you’re sensitive, please be aware. The scene depicted a woman dancing alone in an attic, which then caught fire, consuming the whole room in flames. For obvious safety reasons, it was preferable to shoot the scene in two parts—the “A-side” on the attic set, with the actor performing under lights that looked like a fire burning in the background, and the “B side,” which would be a copy of the attic set built outside, set up to be burned under controlled conditions. For one part of the scene, the actor would be filmed using a SnorriCam, with the camera close to her face, to create a very intimate and dynamic effect. The room burned all around her in the background. With the camera moving around so dramatically, the challenge was how to create a realistic-looking background plate using that same camera move. After chatting with VFX Supervisor Ed Mendez, his team from Powerhouse, and our friend (and motion control legend) Julian Hermannsen, we devised a workflow to make this shot happen. When the A side was shot, we rigged an iPhone running the Mark Roberts Motion Control Tracker app to the RED Digital Cinema V-Raptor mounted to the Snorri rig. The Tracker recorded the camera move in 3D, giving us useful data to recreate the move in Flair so it could ultimately be run on a Bolt for the B side. Julian worked with the VFX team to create the final camera path, which came in at just under one minute, and included a 360º turn in the middle of the move – which meant that for a portion of the move, the robot and camera would see itself. To make that work, the move would have to be run in multiple sections, including repositioning the robot 180º so it could be comped out in post. Shooting multiple sections would also give the creative team more control over how to burn the various parts of the set, and it would be safer than trying to burn the whole set in one go. It was thrilling to feel the heat from the flames as we shot the scene, but the most rewarding part was seeing how well our shots lined up with the A side, which we had on hand for direct comparison. We think the final result came out looking great! What do you think? Cool projects alert! - Viva La Dirt League are launching comic books, video games and super-top-confidential-secret-NDA'd new projects. Personalities and singular Influencers get the lion share of the press and take up an inordinate amount of space when we conjure up what digital content creators look like. It's hard not to get caught up in the hype (and in fairness it's frequently well-deserved) of a new personality bursting onto the scene. But at risk of using a sometimes hollow buzz word (but seeing no other adequate replacement) there are digital creators that are more Media Company than YouTuber while still maintaining what is special about organic UGC content creation. That is they manage to find an unusual balance between highly produced content and professionalized operations, but without being (or even appearing to be) a corporate or contrived exercise in catering to digital consumption, and maintaining the type of intimate connection with their audience and deep fan engagement associated with "Influencers". Viva La Dirt League amongst such creators truly stand out though you are excused if you missed the memo while distracted by the hype train for the latest teenage phenom. Out of NZ, Viva have built an entire independent studio delivering high-end production value while retaining an anarchic sense of humor and authentic edge that keeps them unmistakably themselves. Their fans are dedicated in a way you can't manufacture and can only come from the bottom up build of growing your business organically on a platform like YouTube. They've raised nearly 3M on Kickstarter to back their studio facilities and a short film for their linchpin franchise, the fantasy parody Epic NPC Man. They've recently launched their own subscription platform Viva Plus and are pushing Epic NPC Man into new mediums launching a comic book with Bad Egg Publishing and the RPG Fantasy fishing game you've obviously been waiting for with Team17 Digital and Fusion Play. And you'll see more out of this franchise very soon. Can't possibly say enough effusive things about the whole Viva La Dirt League team and I'll stop myself before I get too saccharin.
