Addressing Suicides Beyond Physical Barriers: A Call for Comprehensive Mental Health Support in Kashmir ( anothe girl jumps into river jehlum ..) In recent years, Kashmir has witnessed an alarming rise in suicide rates, particularly among females. The administration's efforts to prevent these tragic incidents by proposing measures such as fencing vulnerable bridges, while well-intentioned, fall short of addressing the root causes of this growing crisis. To truly mitigate the issue of suicides, it is imperative to go beyond physical barriers and establish a robust mental health support system. This essay argues that implementing 24/7 counselling helplines for various issues, including domestic violence, relationship breakups, drug addiction, and workplace harassment, is essential. Such targeted helplines, even if operated by the same counsellors, can significantly impact individuals' willingness to seek help, thereby providing a lifeline to those in distress. This piece emphasizes the necessity of a multi-faceted approach to address the complex issue of suicides, particularly by highlighting the importance of mental health support and targeted counselling helplines. The Limitations of Physical Barriers Fencing bridges may temporarily prevent individuals from jumping into the River Jhelum or other high-risk areas, but it does not address the underlying psychological issues that lead to suicidal thoughts. The administration's focus on such measures overlooks the complexity of mental health problems, which often result from a combination of factors including personal, social, and economic stressors. By solely concentrating on physical barriers, we risk neglecting the emotional and psychological well-being of individuals, which is the crux of the issue. The Need for Comprehensive Mental Health Support To tackle the problem of suicides effectively, a holistic approach is required—one that considers the mental, emotional, and psychological dimensions of an individual's life. Establishing 24/7 counseling helplines is a crucial step in this direction. These helplines can provide immediate support to individuals in crisis, offering them a safe space to express their feelings and seek guidance. The availability of round-the-clock assistance ensures that help is accessible whenever someone feels overwhelmed, thereby potentially preventing impulsive actions that could lead to self-harm. Functional and Structural MRI Analysis of the Brain Effects of Sahaja Yoga Meditation – New Doctoral Thesis on Sahaja Yoga Brief summary of the thesis: The author Óscar Pérez worked for 4 years to complete this doctoral thesis under the coordination of professors Sergio Elías Hernández Alonso from the ULL and Alfonso Barros Loscertales from the Jaume I University of Castellón. In the thesis he used a multi-methodological approach, based on studies recorded in the resonance scanner for biomedical research at ULL, to investigate the neuronal effects of Sahaja Yoga Meditation, revealing modifications in the functional and structural connectivity of key brain regions, such as the anterior cingulate cortex and the insula, which are associated with improved inhibitory control, emotional regulation and attention. The results of the thesis appear in two scientific articles already published and a third in the process of publication. The presentation and thesis report were evaluated by a jury composed of 3 professors: Professor Lejla Colij from the University of Jena, Germany; Professor María Picó, from the Jaume I University of Castellón; and Professor Leopoldo Acosta, from ULL. Professor with an Unusual Speaking Problem: Caused by an Uncommon Condition 55-year-old Mr Raj Mohan (name changed) was facing an unusual problem for the past three months. He was a professor in Political Science dept and was a favourite among his students. Students would patiently listen to his hour-long lectures without losing concentration. Mr Raj used to love teaching. However, for the past three months, he was facing difficulties during his lectures. His voice used to become faint (low volume) during lectures. This problem was more evident on the days when he had evening classes (as compared to the morning classes). His lectures would start with a good & loud voice, however, by the time he had spoken for about 40 minutes, his voice would become faint, and students found it difficult to comprehend his speech. Mr Raj consulted an ENT surgeon, but no problem was found in his throat. Hs ENT doctor suggested him to consult a neurologist. I reviewed Mr Raj’s history. He had no other symptoms except for speech impairment. The symptoms were typical of a specific disease. I ordered for a few investigations, which confirmed my suspicion. The final diagnosis was myasthenia gravis presenting with dysarthria. Acetyl choline receptor antibody test was positive (elevated). CT scan of the chest showed a thymoma (tumour of thymus gland). I discussed the diagnosis and treatment options with Mr Raj. He was started on medications, and referred for thymectomy (surgical removal of thymus gland). At one month follow up, Mr Raj was doing well, and had joined his work. His speech problem had completely resolved, and his voice was as loud as ever. Myasthenia gravis is an auto-immune disease, and commonly presents with drooping of eyelids, and double vision. Less common presentations include speech or swallowing impairment, generalized weakness and breathing difficulty. Diagnostic delays are common, however, early diagnosis and prompt treatment result in excellent outcome. Two hallmarks of myasthenia symptoms include: 1. Fatigability (worsening of symptoms with prolonged activity), 2. Diurnal variation (worsening of symptoms towards evenings as compared to mornings). When cells experience stress, like from a viral infection or misshapen proteins, the ISR kicks in, causing cells to reduce protein production to combat the stressor, potentially leading to hair follicle damage. ⚡ This breakthrough paves the way for developing interventions to shield hair follicles from this process, potentially offering a proactive approach to combat hair loss. While chromosomes are usually depicted as X's, they actually spend most of their time jumbled up like a giant ball of yarn. Friedrich Miescher first discovered nuclein (DNA) in the early 19th century, and determined it was bound to proteins. But it was Walther Flemming in 1889 who suggested that this DNA-protein complex be called chromatin - which is the material that makes up our chromosomes. Don’t be fooled, though. Just because chromatin was described and named in the 1800’s, that doesn’t mean anyone actually understood what it did! It took until 1950 for scientists to finally begin to understand that the ‘genetic’ material was DNA. And it wasn’t until the 1960’s that we first started piecing together how chromatin actually functioned. To this day, we’re still not entirely sure! But the classical depiction of our genetic material as ‘rods’ or ‘X’ structures in many introductory biology textbooks is not totally accurate. This is because these structures only appear when chromosomes ‘condense’ during cell division! The vast majority of the time, most of our chromosomes are unwound in the nucleus and tangled together in a giant mass. You might be wondering if the interweaving of our chromosomes in the nucleus plays an important role in regulating which genes are expressed? And the answer to that question is: You bet your chromatids it does! While it had been hypothesized for many years that long-range interactions played an important role in gene expression, it wasn’t until 2009 that these chromosomal contacts were first characterized genome-wide. Previous work using a technique called chromosome conformation capture or 3C had shown that regions of chromatin could form ‘loops’ or touch each other at long distances. But in today’s #FigureFriday , the authors mapped chromosome contacts using a technique that they named Hi-C. It differed from previous chromosome conformation capture methods in that it was the first to leverage high throughput sequencing to look at ALL of the connections within and between chromosomes to map the three-dimensional structure of the genome. And what they found was really cool! A) Shows a heat-map of interactions across chromosome 14, B) highlights areas of more contact than expected (red) and less contact than expected (blue), D) shows interchromosomal interactions between chromosome 14 and 20, E and F) highlight how linearly distant regions can actually be in very close proximity to one another, and G and H) show how this architecture correlates with gene rich, open and closed regions of chromosomes! So, why are these results important? Because they showed us how the physical three dimensional structure of our genome can impact gene expression, adding yet another regulatory layer to the story of epigenetics. ### Lieberman-Aiden E et al. 2009. Shah Rukh Khan has one meal a day, hits the gym before sleeping at 5 am: Why expert says his routine is ‘far from ideal’ https://lnkd.in/gbbpscvG Shah Rukh Khan has revealed the following information about his diet, sleep and work out schedules 1. He sleeps for 4-5 hours, starting at AM (until 9 or 10 AM), 2. He has one meal a day (OMAD), 3. He works out for 30 minutes at 3 AM. SRK’s sleep schedule and duration are far from ideal. An adult needs 7-9 hours of sleep at night. People sleeping lesser than 5 hours have a higher risk of diabetes, hypertension, obesity, metabolic syndrome, heart attack, stroke and certain types of cancers. In addition, short sleep duration is also associated with a shorter lifespan. In addition, the best time to initiate sleep is before 11 PM, and definitely before 12 midnight. This is based on our natural circadian rhythm. People who go to bed after 12 midnight have a higher risk of cardiovascular diseases. One meal a day (OMAD) as a part of intermittent fasting is good, and is associated with multiple health-related benefits. There are no randomized controlled trials on this topic, however, there are multiple studies on humans and animals that suggest that intermittent fasting is likely to be beneficial to health. Working out for 30 minutes is ideal, however, 3 AM is not the ideal time for working out. It would be preferable to shift the work-out timings to evenings. Strenuous work outs closer to sleep time can cause sleep disturbance.

Years ago I remember the moment that the "80/20" rule of life really hit home with me as a professional. My non-scientific interpretation of this reminded me that 20% of people tend to do 80% of the work to make change. Years ago I also learned that when you gather the 20% 🦄's together - the momentum was unstoppable. Today, I seek to align myself with individuals who are driving change and generating momentum, those who are open to both giving and receiving - ideas, support, friendship, and collaboration. The impactful work, the endeavors that truly make a difference, are often solitary, challenging, and frustrating, and can make you feel like you're constantly lagging behind. But when you gather a small group of people together like Michelle Kirschner, who sees the big picture, incredible things can happen.
