Although it wasn’t filled with fancy extras, I feel incredibly fortunate for my upbringing. It sowed some core values that truly shaped me: 🌟 Frugality: I learned to be satisfied with less and found ways to have fun within our means. It helped me develop a mindset of innovation and differentiate between needs and wants from an early age. 🌟 Setting Priorities: My parents never compromised on our education, but fancy gadgets or fulfilling childish desires? Not so much. With limited resources, I had to prioritize what truly mattered. It taught me the art of making tough choices and saying "no" to less important things. 🌟 Appreciating Small Things: Instead of waiting for ground-breaking achievements, my parents encouraged us to celebrate simple things. It meant receiving a small treat for good grades or a special surprise from my mom. These lessons shaped my resilience, gratitude, and ability to find happiness in the present and simplest moments. I helped an SDE with 9 years exp in getting career clarity and feeling confident about the next career moves. She was: - a top team player - an attitude of getting the job done - giving her 200%, never saying no for any work This was sometimes causing a lot of stretch. But her real problem was: - less about the stretch - more about the clarity (side note: you see, if you have 10 problems to solve, and one of them is not having career clarity, then that trumps over all other problems) - She was doing software engineer's work - But was thinking about data engineer's work - And was very curious about the manager's work She tried getting clarity from her director. Result: More confusion. Instead of giving clarity, director sent her on a self realization loop. Ever heard these lines? "You should take a step back, think about it, figure it out, and then come to me." Wait a second, wasn't this the reason she came to you? - to get career clarity. - and then take actions. So, this is how we did it. [1] We first started with knowing her interests. I asked a question in 3-4 different ways to understand: - what she actually wanted to do - is it because of not knowing the impact of her work - or if it is because of the desire to do something else Turned out it was later (true desire) [2] We then discussed a detailed strategy: - to have career development session with her manager - to define a very specific agenda for that session - to show why she is good fit for management - to tell how she is feeling about current role And that how, by the end of the session, she changed: - from feeling confused to feeling clear - from feeling lost to feeling confident Having clarity about how you spend your 8 hours everyday is more important than actually spending those 8 hours. Because, only this leads to long term fulfillment. There are 4 ways of getting the clarity [1] You do it yourself. It doesn't work 99% time. Because it needs clarity of thoughts. Which is what you don't have. So, its an infinite loop. [2] Talk to your manager. Very few managers help with it. Sometimes they don't have incentives Sometimes, they don't know or have time. But if you have a helpful manager, this is best. [3] Talk to your friends. Very few friends can really do it. Most of the times, they themselves are not clear. [4] Take external help. This depends on the exp of coach. Sometimes it works, sometimes doesn't But has the highest rate among all the 4 methods. So, if you need help with it: Go for option # 2, or option # 4.
