On Oct. 19, communication with Voyager 1 stopped entirely when its X-band transmitter was turned off. The spacecraft's fault protection system is believed to have been triggered twice more, ultimately causing it to switch to the S-band radio transmitter, which, prior to that date, hadn't been used since 1981. Given the spacecraft is located much farther away in interstellar space today than it was 43 years ago, the flight team was not sure a signal on the S-band frequency could be detected — especially because it transmits a significantly fainter signal while using less power. However, the team didn't want to risk sending another signal to the X-band transmitter and triggering the fault protection system again. So, instead, a command was sent to the S-band transmitter on Oct. 22. Two days later, on Oct. 24, the team was finally able to reconnect with Voyager 1.

Omron has developed and released its G9KC relay with a mechanically coupled, double-break contact design for three-phase high-charging wallboxes. The relay can reduce the operating temperature in wallboxes up to 22 kW while improving the charging process’ efficiency and speed. The relay uses a 4-pole structure to replace the traditional, larger multipole contractors in wallboxes. The relay has an initial contact resistance of less than 6 mΩ, which reduces the chance of localized hotspots forming within the wallbox to prevent component deterioration and wallbox failure. The G9KC also has a low operation temperature, which decreases the number of charge cycles that reach the charging current throttling thresholds.It has been designed to meet the specifications of IEC 62955—Residual direct current detecting device (short circuit capability) and IEC 61851-1—Electric vehicle conductive charging systems.

When I'm not out fixing your machine I get to flex some other skills like PCB design and programming. I just sent this out to NC State University. We took a 2100EX and converted it to create plasma in a cavity. We replaced the entire console with this board. We had to rewire the modulator, add a stepper motor to a shunt T, and rewired the stand. The only missing component is an Arduino Mega. The Mega can run the machine by itself using only serial commands. But we built a GUI in LabView to go along with it. Just another day at Southern Linac saving somebody money and making solutions possible. Checking out the joystick over WiFi in the Scratch Robot. This is the nano 33 with the motor carrier board Perfect project for parent child. The joystick is a big laggy and takes time to be precise. Have to check out the parameters. As I said a good entry into robotics without ROS shock. Maybe next step is MQTT, ROS, MicroROS I am happy I tried the nano 33. Maybe even easier to setup than the ESP32. It was a snap to setup once I learned the finer points. The advantage of having the Python screen on the desktop is that I can monitor the feed to the nano and verify that all is good. Simulation with the physical hardware will take you to the next level. You have to see the physical interaction.

Sensor Design and Optical Fiber Implementation: ◦ Optical Fiber Bending Sensor: The core of the project is an optical fiber sensor that detects bending and deformation. Optical fibers are highly sensitive to changes in curvature, making them ideal for capturing joint movements. ◦ Lego MINDSTORMS: To facilitate the modeling of human joints, a custom firmware scheme was developed using Lego components. This approach allowed for a modular and adaptable framework to replicate the complexity of human joint movements, focusing initially on the elbow. Elbow Movement Reproduction: ◦ Elbow Joint Model: Using the Lego-based firmware, an accurate model of the human elbow joint was constructed. This model served as the testbed for the bending sensor, enabling the simulation of realistic elbow movements. ◦ Sensor Integration: The optical fiber sensor was integrated into the elbow joint model, allowing for real-time monitoring and reproduction of elbow movements. The sensor's data was processed to replicate the dynamic range of motion of the elbow. Circuit Design and PCB Development: ◦ INA128-Based Circuit: A custom circuit based on the INA128 instrumentation amplifier was designed to amplify the signals from the optical fiber sensor. The INA128 was chosen for its high precision and low noise characteristics, ensuring accurate signal amplification. ◦ PCB Fabrication: the PCB was developed to house the INA128-based circuit and other necessary components. The PCB design was optimized for compactness and reliability, facilitating easy integration with the sensor and joint model. Deterioration Analysis: ◦ Sensor Durability Testing: A comprehensive deteriorati in analysis was conducted to evaluate the long-term performance and durability of the optical fiber sensor. This involved subjecting the sensor to repeated bending cycles and environmental stressors to simulate real-world usage. ◦ Data Analysis: The data collected during the deterioration tests was analyzed to identify any degradation in sensor performance over time. This analysis helped in understanding the sensor's lifespan and reliability, providing insights for future improvements. The project successfully demonstrated the feasibility of using an optical fiber-based bending sensor to reproduce human joint movements, with a focus on the elbow. The sensor's high sensitivity and precision allowed for accurate tracking of joint angles and movements. The integration with a Lego MINDSTORMS provided a versatile and modular approach to joint modeling. The deterioration analysis highlighted the sensor's robustness and potential areas for enhancement.

When should I start considering Product Safety for my device design development? This is a question that I get asked a lot. There's no definitive answer for this question, all design development efforts are different and not all fall in the same bucket, but for medical devices it has to be considered as early as possible to avoid delays on market availability due to last minute product safety deficiencies. The earlier it is integrated into the process, the more effectively risks can be managed, compliance with regulatory standards can be ensured, and costly redesigns or delays can be avoided. Here are some key phases when product safety considerations should be a priority: 1. Concept and Design Phase: • Identify potential hazards and risks early on (through risk assessments like FMEA or FTA). • Consider user safety, ergonomics, and usability. • Align with relevant safety standards and regulations, such as ISO 14971 (Risk Management for Medical Devices) and IEC 60601 (for electrical safety). 2. Prototyping and Development Phase: • Ensure that safety features are integrated into the design and prototypes. • Perform safety testing to validate design decisions (e.g., biocompatibility testing, electrical safety testing). 3. Insight into healing - sounds good to me! The lumbar fusion data reporting device from Canary Medical Inc. collects activity levels and kinematics to compare the patient's performance to that of their peers. Hopefully the early insights into spinal fusion progression result in more successful patient outcomes and greater long-term stability. Data to back up the patient's experience can also drive equitable care. I wonder what other kinds of information would be most helpful to guide recovery and return to a healthy lifestyle. Perhaps calculating load experienced on the joint per type of activity and trending that with what kind of load results in the most robust healing and mobility could help inform the type of physical therapies recommended to patients post-op. I would also like to see this implemented with spinal disc replacements, not just spinal fusion devices.
