For the past decade, I've had the privilege of helping my clients identify meaningful ways to connect their delivery teams to business outcomes. The most exciting announcement from the latest Salesforce release for me is the introduction of the new UUID class, which simplifies the process of generating Version 4 UUIDs directly in Apex. This update eliminates the need for custom code or third-party libraries, offering a streamlined and reliable solution for creating unique identifiers. "Name a variable with the same care you would give to naming your first-born child." This powerful insight from Robert C. Martin's "Clean Code" mirrors my approach to naming components in Salesforce. Whether dealing with fields, objects, flows, or reports, the goal is always to craft names that immediately reveal the 'Who, What, When, How, and Why' of each element. Yet, in the rush to progress, it's tempting to quickly name a field and push forward. This hasty decision can lead to API names that haunt your dreams like a bad horror movie—cryptic, confusing, and hard to remember. To escape this nightmare, I increasingly rely on AI tools like #ChatGPT. A quick brain dump and a request for intuitive names, precise descriptions, and helpful tips can significantly improve the clarity and longevity of your work. Do you know about any undocumented ServiceNow system properties? Current or in the past? My favorite was glide.alter.online... what is that you ask? I was working on my first consulting project and I didn't know about best practice, so I'd built the world's largest update set, almost a full year of development activities packed into the most ludicrous update set of all time. Looking back I should be embarrassed but hey we all have to learn right? The update set took over 10 hours to commit from dev to test. So I logged a ticket with Hi and they introduced me to the glide.alter.online system property. When you commit an update set in ServiceNow you don't cause a system outage, there are no table locks, why is that? Well it basically takes a copy of the database, makes the changes and snaps it back into place. The glide.alter.online = false changes it so that your update set commit actually does create outages and table locks as it alters the tables directly. The net result for my enormous ridiculous update set? It committed in under 30 mins. For years after learning about that property I would ask my clients can we schedule an outage? If yes I'd use the property, if no, I would not. It was a handy tool in the toolbelt, but I can't say if it still works, its been years since I used it! What undocumented property or feature have you used? Yes, I've been a bit quiet lately. What have I been up to? I've been heads-down working on a Salesforce CPQ to RLM migration project for a global company in the... SPACE INDUSTRY! This nerd girl is living the dream, working on the most powerful quoting and fulfillment software on Salesforce, designing for efficiency and vastly improving current state, and on client site this week, in my favorite state, with posters and models of space vehicles all around.
