In addition; a few extra data points we see during election cycles: During an election cycle, attention surges to all coverage areas. In the last U.S. presidential election, we saw a 63% year on year increase in monthly unique visitors to our platform. Advertising during an election cycle works. Ads showed a 1.26x click-through rate and 20% higher universal interaction rate in election vs non-election cycles. During that same election cycle, we delivered a higher ROI for our advertisers. We recently compared data for September through December 2020 to those months the following year. The figures are stark: In the last U.S. presidential election period, readers were 37% more likely to recall an ad than in the off-cycle period, 58% more likely to look for more information after seeing an ad, and 125% were more likely to purchase or plan a purchase after seeing an ad. That’s effectiveness at all points of the funnel. There is no brand risk associated with hard news stories, and ads placed adjacent to stories about politics perform as effectively as ads placed next to business, sports and entertainment content, according to research released in May from Stagwell. (Let us know if you’d like a copy of the research.) These latter categories are already the darlings of brand advertising, so ads next to them face stiffer competition to stand out. Adjacency to hard news and politics is an opportunity to reach a valuable, engaged and unduplicated audience. The majority of what we cover is through a business and finance lens, including politics. This lens offers a useful and relevant perspective for both our readers and our advertisers. Other brands’ hesitation can become your competitive advantage: By strategically positioning your advertisements when others are fearing political noise, you can stand out in a less crowded commercial space and achieve greater visibility.
