  • Have EV's Ended The Alt-Fuel Argument?

    FLEETSolutions Magazine

    Why aren’t fleets going EV?
    - For their trucks and vans, our clients confirm that the return on investment for electric vehicles remains lower than utilizing a gas or diesel powered vehicle. Here we can draw the simple comparison between a Chevy Bolt ($36K) and a Chevy Equinox ($23K), which averages 25 MPG. If the Equinox drives 20,000 miles per year, then it would consume 800 gallons per year, equaling $2,000 in fuel annually. Running those fuel usage numbers over a period of 5 years…

Running those fuel usage numbers over a period of 5 years, takes us to $33K for acquisition + fuel cost.
    - Service vehicles may be the last to move to alternative fuels – their cost of downtime is too high to risk utilizing vehicles that won’t deliver the businesses’ needs. Consider a long-haul trucker: with EV ranges hovering around 100 miles before requiring a recharge, it’s not feasible for EVs to make a meaningful step into this segment until ranges are extended to what can be driven in one shift.
    - Lack of OEM availability of EVs in the truck and van segment
    - Lack of infrastructure (charging stations) to support broad roll-out of EVs - The hyperlink below shows the cost to UPS to create CNG infrastructure at 6 locations…while not a direct translation to EV infrastructure, this can give a broad idea on cost: https://pressroom.ups.com/pressroom/ContentDetailsViewer.page?ConceptType=PressReleases&id=1489579573572-162

What needs to be in place for EVs to become a meaningful part of the fleet market?
    - Pervasive OEM-agnostic, public charging infrastructure and longer ranges. Businesses can’t take the risk that their vehicles will be out of service without a quick way to go back online.
    - Extended set of OEM EVs that address a wider breadth of fleet truck and van needs.
