New med device reps.... Never ask for an order. I know, sales managers right now are like "What in the living hell is this lunatic saying?".... 🤐 But this is what I mean.... Ask: How do you think this will impact patient care? How much extra time might you gain by using our product? What is the cost savings looking like? You get the point. Be smarter. Be clever. Asking for an order will not get you an order. Begging, on the other hand, might have its benefits....  🤷‍♂️ I know I know, you are there to get orders and if you don't ask you don't get. Truth. I'm imploring you to be better with your questions. Your customer will make their decision based on how they feel about... the product the pricing you And, at least in my experience, you can't force an order....nor should you attempt to.... Now go and make me proud! 💪 👊 #TWS

“There is a difference between giving up and knowing when you have had enough.” I talk to frustrated reps weekly about their teams/POD’s and the opportunities that they are not given to sell and make more money. Now there are two different scenarios in which this takes place: 1. You aren’t trusted by your team leader in the territory to sell to new doctors - plain and simple 2. Your team leader doesn’t want you to sell and build strong relationships and then translate that into leverage (i.e. flipping to another company, taking the surgeons and breaking out into your own territory, etc…) Number 1 is most likely a personal problem. If you can’t be trusted by the team leader to have a sales conversation, then it’s on you to figure out why not, and how you can get better and gain the trust to try. All sales reps fail a sales call more times than they win. But good sales reps don’t let that define them, nor do they let that stop them. You need to hone your sales skills and find a mentor that can help teach you how to overcome those losses. Otherwise, you will be a cover rep for the remainder of your career. And remember, cover reps have a monetary value that is well below that of a sales rep. You may not agree with that, but that’s the way it is. Sales reps sell the business/products and the cover reps show up and maintain that business. Now number 2 is a different scenario. If you have showed the ability to sell through product knowledge, sales acumen and willingness to learn, then you now have a tough situation. You may love the team, the surgeons you work with, the staff and the region you are in. But if you want to be a sales rep that sells, then it may be time to move on. I am hearing of more and more stories like this from young reps. They are hungry. They want to sell. They want the opportunity to make commissions and be paid well for their efforts. If your team wont allow you to do those things, then you can either stay and accept your role or move on (most likely with another company) and find an opportunity that gives you the chance to succeed. Figure out which role it is that you want, and commit to that path. Sales reps and cover reps are both needed in the orthopedic sales space. No doubt about it. But if you decide to be a cover rep, don’t get upset when the sales team is selling and making more money and you are staying the same. Because this job is setup for success for the ones who want to sell. Disclaimer: This is meant for reps who are out of that 2 year associate role and have been apart of enough cases to have the knowledge to present a product to a surgeon. Happy Saturday! Today marks my 9th year anniversary at Align Technology, and it’s pretty fitting to be spending it right here in Portland with some special TM’s, TCod one of the best speakers at Align, and 75 General Dentists from all over the country here to light up their practices with Invisalign! I was just visiting with a doctor who’s here that I met my first week on the job at a CE event, I was first his rep, and now managing the team of reps that help him succeed. It’s so fun to catch up, about both life and business and to think about almost a decade of being here! My colleagues and many of my customers at Align have become a beautiful work family. In my nine years here I’ve seen some success, I’ve had incredible leadership above me, advanced from rep to Senior GP Business RM, had some amazing performances and some challenging times too. Big life things came at me, I’ve birthed and potty trained two human beings, set up my life in this beautiful place. I have the most supportive husband out there that sees what this work means to me and we have this wild 2 driven career parents/ 2 young kids/hot potato household. I’ve also had big hard life things happen, the experience of our first born having a life saving heart surgery just a few days old, the loss of both of my parents, and a special dog I had 17 years…to name a few. There is no such thing as work life balance, I’ve always viewed this as an understanding that there will always be something that has to give, there is a pace to career building and to building a happy healthy family and sometimes those moments collide and I feel spread pretty thin. Sometimes I’m flyin high and feel pretty good about all of it, and then I remember to enjoy those moments. Some of the things I’ve learned…Surround yourself with people that truly support you. Have a why within your why. Be open to adjusting your why…because life changes and that’s okay. Own your failures, celebrate your success in equal measure. In the end it always comes to my work “why” and my life “why” Today my work why is coaching my team to be the most impactful part of their customer/doctors days and to help them pull value from work into their personal lives and value from their personal lives into work in an organic way. My personal “why” is that I have built a career as a working mother that supports the things in life I now value the most…to be there as much as I possibly can for the little things with my kids and husband/family and never ever miss the big stuff.
