For Chief Information Security Officers the advancement of deepfake technology—where like in this video AI animates a portrait to mimic facial expressions from a video feed—presents both compelling opportunities and significant challenges. On the opportunity side, virtual influencers and your own digital twins could engage with audiences 24/7, and artificial movie stars or copies of popular actors might revolutionize the entertainment industry, creating new opportunities for actors to digitize themselves and earn royalties from their digital copies. AI-driven personas can could even represent brands and interact with customers in highly customized ways. However, this technology also introduces serious security concerns. The rise of deepfakes—highly realistic manipulated videos—poses a major risk. They can be used for impersonation, fraud, and spreading misinformation, threatening privacy and eroding trust. This might be very relevant in current political elections. Regulations and cybersecurity frameworks like NIST are catching up. So are regulations. The EU AI Act, particularly Title II (Prohibited AI Practices) and Title III (High-Risk AI Systems), mandates transparency and requires high-risk AI systems to meet strict requirements, including risk management systems, logging of activities, and human oversight. Additionally, the Biden Executive Order on Promoting Competition in the American Economy emphasizes the importance of data privacy and security, aiming to protect consumers and promote fair competition. This highlights the need of critical measures to counteract the misuse of AI technologies like deepfakes. Google’s Secure AI Framework (SAIF) also provides essential guidelines for deploying AI responsibly. SAIF emphasizes securing the AI lifecycle, ensuring data integrity, and implementing robust monitoring and auditing mechanisms to detect and mitigate risks associated with AI systems. Advanced detection methods are crucial. Leveraging deep learning models to spot inconsistencies in videos, such as unnatural lighting, shadows, and facial movements, is vital. As we embrace AI innovations, maintaining a strong focus on ethical practices and robust security measures is crucial. By integrating with AI security frameworks, adhering to regulations, and using cutting-edge detection technologies, we can enjoy the benefits of AI while safeguarding against its potential dangers. Apple just announced a bunch of new stuff at #WWDC, focused around #AI as expected. My favorites: For the non-AI stuff first: - Vision Pro has greatly improved the Mac virtual display. Apple says it is now equivalent to 24K monitors side-by-side. - Messages finally supports formatting with bold, italics, underline, etc. Some new animated “special effects” on text as well. - Maps now has trails and topographical maps built in. - Apple Watch added a “training load” feature that estimates the effort being put into a workout based on factors like heart rate, age, elevation, and more. - You can sketch mathematical equations in the notes app, and the results will automatically be calculated for you. - New passwords app! Everybody should using a password manager, and Apple has always had password-storing functionality. Hopefully a dedicated app makes this easier for everyone. The AI additions deserve their own section! They’ve co-opted AI to mean “Apple Intelligence”. Typical Apple marketing at work… - AI writing tools let you write or proofread across just about every app in your system. - Images can be generated as well, with functionality similar to tools like Dall-E. Includes a new “Image Playground” appear image generation. - On-device data powers the “intelligence”, but privacy is still maintained at its core and you control when requests for AI functionality are sent off to a server somewhere. - Message, emails, and more can be summarized automatically - and selectively notify you. - Auto-generate new “emoji” on the fly (this one looks really fun!) - AI enhancements are being added to the photos app. Search by things like “Maya skateboarding in a tie-dye shirt”, plus AI-enhanced photo editing and repairing - Recording and summaries is a part of Notes, and is “coming soon” to phone calls too. - ChatGPT (GPT-4o) is supported as an external model, separately from what is built-in to the operating system. Some ChatGPT functionality is free, but paid features can be added as well. Lots of the AI capabilities are being exposed via an SDK so that developers can take advantage of them in their apps. Overall, it seems like the different AI capabilities are about what you would expect if you have been watching the tools from OpenAI evolve, but they are definitely being done with an Apple touch. Can't wait to watch for more as the betas come out!
