I've had the good fortune of working at more than a handful of companies throughout my career, enough of them that I am clear on what suits me and what doesn't. Priority #1 = GOOD PEOPLE. I need (in no particular order) amiable, fun, calm, smart, balanced, small-ego'd, life-cherishing, (dog-loving-preferred) people. Next...a great, big, beautiful STEEP LEARNING CURVE...if I'm not boldly going where Jeff has never gone before, I'm just plain bored. There must also be RELEVANCE...whatever product, service, or company I represent must provide true solutions for today's new demands and challenges. Lastly, I need to LOVE THE PRODUCT. Isn't it time to clear the fog of "murky media" mistrust? Nearly eight years have passed since "murky media practices” made headlines. Yet, as Adweek’s recent report highlights, rebates and perks from media owners remain common, influencing media decisions and compromising clients' best interests. So, has anything changed? Many advertisers have recognised the importance of solid contracts and better governance, but dubious practices remain and marketers’ faith in their agencies often remains weak. But there's a ray of sunshine amidst the gloom! Many marketers are enhancing their measurement capabilities with Marketing Mix Modeling (MMM) and A/B testing to assess effectiveness firsthand. This shift toward robust measurement allows them to confidently gauge improvements in media performance based on solid evidence. Good measurement need a little expert guidance, but it doesn't need to be costly: simple tests can yield powerful insights about how media decisions affect performance, including brand equity. Let’s confront the mistrust and foster a culture where innovation is celebrated without being overshadowed by holding groups' margins.

It’s AAPI Heritage month! There is a lot packed into this month but here’s my wish of what people take away: see us and understand it’s important for us to see each other. “We can’t be what we can’t see.” - Marian Wright Edelman, former president of the Children’s Defense Fund For me, seeing more and more AAPI creators (like Zach King, Ashley Alexander, Kelly Wakasa, Ali Abdaal, Cassey Ho, Chloe Ting, Joanne Molinaro – The Korean Vegan, NileRed, and Allen Chickin Chow), executives, changemakers, and community leaders in the media and tech space has been so exciting, affirming, and encouraging. To know the generations coming up seeing us in this space is meaningful. To have opportunities to collaborate, celebrate, and learn from other AAPI folks in this space is meaningful. Those opportunities were much fewer earlier in my career; I’m happy to say they’ve grown over time as more AAPI folks are represented and have joined the ranks and I’m hopeful this will continue. So here’s to the AAPI community, especially in the creator economy – may we continue to raise up more AAPI storytellers and those of us who support them to see, be seen, and contribute our voices to the wider world. And on a related note, shoutout to Kabir Ahuja 👏🏻 and the team at McKinsey & Company (in collaboration with Goldhouse) for publishing their report “From margins to mainstream: Asians and Pacific Islanders in Hollywood”. TLDR; AAPI representation has drastically improved but there’s still a ton of headroom left and money to be made. Give it a read! "Given demographic trends, the total value at stake will likely only increase in the future. The US API population grew from 10.8 million in 2000 to 19.5 million in 2019, a jump of more than 80 percent. It is expected to almost double to 37.9 million—nearly 9 percent of the US population—by 2060. Our projections indicate that by 2060, the total opportunity to capture additional spending could rise to approximately $4 billion to $8 billion a year in today’s dollars if spending and income patterns continue."

They are adding this new streaming bundle to their existing suite of utilities to enhance the value they provide per customer. Comcast has lost total customer relationships in the last year - with multiple product homes seeing the steepest decline. But, if you look across ALL their products, you see a more integrated lifestyle bundle than StreamSaver - with wireless, broadband and streaming - perfect for the GenZ/GenY “cord-never” home. The question is if Kabletown can evolve their myriad offerings into a user-centric lifestyle bundle AND market it convincingly to twenty-to-thirty-something heads of households?

An update on the open role on my team / trying to be as transparent as possible in the process. I've gotten north of 200 resumes and have finished the initial review and started reaching out to some of the top candidates. Having said that, I wanted to share some insights based on my experience that hopefully will be helpful as people continue to apply for roles in a tough job market. 1) If my only job was to hire someone, the level of interest would be exciting. But it is more overwhelming than exciting - finding the time to even review all of the resumes while still working on growth and strategy is its own challenge that many hiring managers face. And yes, I have read all of them - while I am intrigued by AI and use it in various capacities, I am not sold that it is the best solution (yet) for a people-first role where vibe and personality traits are more relevant than experience. In other words, all of that time that applicants put into their cover letters and resumes probably results in someone actually reading them still at smaller companies - and so your efforts in that regard are not unappreciated. But, be patient when you apply because the reality is, many people are trying to do their jobs while hiring for needed support - noone intentionally ghosts (I hope). 2) There are some amazing candidates out there right now. I wish I had more roles because the combination of some of the talent available right now would make for a dream team. Companies that are in position to hire - congratulations, there are some serious game-changing talents in the market right now. But also - many of these amazing candidates currently ARE employed and just not happy. Whether their company is taking them for granted, things have stagnated, etc, they are looking for a reason - and that's a lesson for all of us. 3) Don’t be afraid to humanize yourself.  Many cover letters are a synopsis of the resume, a recap of what was in the job description, or something that was written by AI (yes, there were a few of these). I know many articles / career coaches etc suggest this approach, but when a human is reading through 200+ of them, they tend to blur. I found myself drawn to more story-driven letters that showcased not just the experience, but the personality and vibe that is so important to this role.  Tell a story about you that ties in your goals and aligns with the company's, why you love this industry, and yes, why you are good at what you do. It makes you stand out and showcases that personality. 4) Connections matter. I had several people I know and trust come to me suggesting someone for the role. In a world where everyone is qualified (see point #2), that connection is even more meaningful. NETWORK! Whether people are in a position to hire you or not, talk to your connections and just stay in touch because you never know who they know and how that will matter. I'll try and open up time on my calendar next month for anyone that just wants to connect!

Could Roku and Tubi be the next frontier for branded storytelling? For now, we're seeing most brands publish on YouTube and promote across social media--but if the rules were different, I'm sure they'd love to make a deal with big distributors like Netflix or a cable network instead. Maybe Tubi and Roku are the happy middle! Roku already features Red Bull TV among their channels. Plus, I predict that as these platforms look for high-quality content that can help them grow, partnering with brands might be the perfect solution. Tubi just shared research (link in the comments!) showing that Gen Z and Millennials prefer original content from independent creators, and branded entertainment can fit right into that market demand. I could absolutely imagine a fast channel about original Asian American stories and talent. What would it look like for more well-known brands to tap into the entertainment space? So tell me, where do you fall in the Great Marketing Tug of War? Are you in Camp Brand or Camp Performance? Camp Performance Marketing appears to have been leveled by a tornado. The cabins are roofless, the canoes are scattered along the shore, and the cafeteria is no longer serving anything but rations. The DTC companies who showed up every year are now huddled by the exit, hoping mom & dad show up. Camp Brand Marketing, less popular in recent years, is showing signs of life. Rebuilding is taking place, but campers are still a bit tentative. Only the lanyard-making tent is really active. The tug of war between the camps is getting interesting. DTC brands, some shattered, some shuttered, are associated with performance marketing, making it an easy target. “Performance marketing doesn’t build demand. It harvests demand,” media guru Brian Morrissey said on a recent podcast with brand expert Ana Andjelic. “I think the internet’s been a disaster for brands.” Well, OK, but no one is leaving the internet anytime soon. I’m going to argue for a foot in both camps—or better yet, a camp merger. Maybe it’s because I use performance marketing techniques to test branding and brand positioning, but the dichotomy seems false to me. Big, emotional brand campaigns are important, but they are more effective when also tailored to different audiences. Performance marketing offers a savvy way to optimize and fine-tune brand messages for audiences that are adjacent but distinct. A brand story can be conveyed in all kinds of ways, including through so-called performance ads that encourage a response. It just requires a little more creativity in uniting both camps. And let’s face it—getting quantitative feedback on brand marketing is a benefit, not a drawback. So, campers unite! #brand #marketing #brandmarketing #performancemarketing #validation

John, Dan, and I are still working together...just under different names and structures. ---- For those who have worked with us in the past - here's the gist: John Monroe (former partner & post sup) is now running his own post house, Transform. The way he's set up his new company is brilliant and if you're somebody who hires high-end post artists, you should know John. Dan Leyendecker (former line producer) is now freelancing full time. To any EP, production company, or agency who hires line producers...I can't recommend this guy enough. and I'm kicking off a new production venture of my own at Departure. ---- For those who haven't worked with us, here's the gist: I started a production company 8 years ago called BL&S. A good friend of mine, John Monroe, joined shortly after and we went full time with it 6 years ago this month. (time flies!) Our first hire was producer, Dan Leyendecker. The three of us grew BL&S into a production company that I'm proud to have been a part of. High end clients, cool work, great team, etc. etc. But...we've decided to close the "BL&S chapter" and start a new one. This time as peers, not partners/employees. Each of us are going all-in on our respective areas of expertise. --- For those who are working with BL&S on an active job, or are currently engaged with us in some way: You will not experience any change aside from emails being sent from new addresses. Tubi launches in the UK - OTT overkill? "Tubi, the free advertising-supported streaming service owned by Fox Corp., is looking to bring its success formula to the U.K., launching in the market on Tuesday, July 2. The streamer, led by CEO Anjali Sud, the former head of Vimeo, now has about 80 million monthly active users....In the U.S., its strategy has differed from other FAST platforms. For example, 90 percent of viewing on Tubi is focused on on-demand movies and TV series, compared to peers’ focus on live, linear channels. And per the Nielsen Gauge from May, Tubi made up 1.8 percent of all TV viewing in the U.S. for that month, tied with Disney+." "“Tubi has spent the last decade honing our approach to vast, free and fun streaming in North America, and we feel that now is the perfect time to bring that recipe to U.K. audiences,” said Sud in unveiling the U.K. debut. “We are launching with one of the largest and most diverse content libraries in the U.K., designed to indulge viewers in everything from blockbusters to original stories to hidden gems.”" Tubi's different approach has had success in the US, and the logic goes, if it can work in the US, it can work anywhere, especially in the UK given the common language. However, that's a lazy comparison to make. Despite the commonality in language, the UK as a TV market is much more like Europe than it is the US. The UK has several free alternatives, and more focused on the local market, ITV X, BBC iPlayer, Channel 4, plus the growing range of #fastchannels on offer in the market. Added to that the paid #svod services, Disney+ Prime, Netflix, Paramount etc. Then of course there's still #lineartv with freeview offering around 50-70 channels for free. "Much of Tubi’s early work will be “listening” to consumers’ usage, reaction and input. “This is about putting the U.K. viewer at the center,” argued Sud. “Right now, our perspective is it’s day one, let’s earn the right to deeply understand this audience.”" - Well in my opinion, the only way to do this, is to invest in originals and make an impact on the UK, meeting the market at its level. That is what the competition is doing, rather than sending US series for a US audience to the UK and expecting the same results. Of course, like in all markets it has its place, and will have interest, given Tubi's Fox catalogue. However, there's a ceiling on that approach. They're indicating they'll focus on Bollywood productions. But the UK has a big Bollywood-focused media already, what is Tubi bringing that's new? "management will remain open-minded. “It’s not prescriptive,” Sud said. “It’s a bottoms-up culture, it’s not a top-down approach.” - Remains to be seen, my bet is its more the latter. https://lnkd.in/eqWZu7mT

During a conference this week, Sony Pictures Entertainment CEO Tony Vinciquerra stated that the business is trying to create more profitable, genre-specific streaming projects that are equivalent to Crunchyroll. Tony stated, "We would love to launch more genre-based targeted, passionate fan centered streaming services. We're really positive on that front. And that's what we're now working on. However, it will take some time for the market to stabilize." He added that Sony is not beset by legacy TV networks, in contrast to Disney and other broadcasters. When he began working for Sony, the business had 110 cable networks worldwide. However, all of those networks have since been sold, with the exception of three markets—Spain, Latin America, and India—where cable networks are continuously expanding. For licensing of content, Sony has "proposed structures where we'd get the show back after 4 years or 5 years as opposed to the much longer terms that are currently in place, but thus far, there hasn't been much development in that area." Tony said that when it comes to consolidation in the market, Sony plans to "sit back and watch what comes available to us because we're in a very stable, very comfortable position.
