During a three-week effort, Future Vertical Cross Functional Team (FVLCFT) partnered with U.S. Army DEVCOM C5ISR Center, U.S. Army DEVCOM Aviation & Missile Center and the U.S. Army Redstone Test Center (RTC) at Eglin Air Force Base, Florida to advance Launched Effects (LE) behaviors and characteristics for the #warfighter. FVL completed Phase 3 of the advanced networking waveform characterization during the experimentation. The team collected data on multiple radios and waveforms during multi-ship flights at extended operational ranges against both contested and uncontested environments. Data gathered will be used to inform future aviation modernization; and to validate, modeling and simulation efforts. The intent was to learn about the trade space of long-range air to air; and air to ground communications. The emphasis is increased range and endurance for future LEs combined with a low probability of detection, and a low probability of jamming from perceived threats. LE surrogates successfully demonstrated teaming behaviors, characteristics, and attributes against both contested and uncontested conditions as they negotiated the test area. Partnership with industry is a cornerstone of the Traffic Coordination System for Space (#TraCSS) program. Since fiscal year 2023, the Office of Space Commerce has funded multiple commercial space situational awareness (SSA) pilots and pathfinders and engaged stakeholders in other meaningful ways. OSC’s commercial SSA purchases are not only investments in the growth of new space markets; they are helping OSC pave the way for an operational TraCSS that leverages commercial market innovation and existing capabilities. Since January 2024, the Consolidated Pathfinder project has been blazing trails toward the use of commercial data and services in the operational TraCSS. It is a limited-term effort focused on demonstrating SSA services for the LEO regime using commercial SSA providers. NSPA Awards Raytheon a $478M Patriot GEM-T Missile Contract Raytheon, an RTX business, was awarded a $478 million contract from the NATO Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA) to supply additional GEM-T missiles to Germany. This contract supports the replenishment of Patriot missiles donated by Germany to Ukraine. Showing their strong support for Ukraine, Denmark, the Netherlands and Norway have agreed to participate in the financing of this procurement. "Our customers are already realizing the benefits of bundled, multi-national procurement of Patriot missiles through NSPA, including the economies that offer greater affordability and the pre-negotiated contracting framework that shortens the acquisition timeline," said Tom Laliberty, president of Land and Air Defense Systems at Raytheon. "As a result, not only can we better support the missile inventories for these European partners, but also strengthen our cooperation, their interoperability, and their contribution to an essential NATO mission." Ms Stacy A. Cummings, NSPA General Manager, confirmed: "This contract demonstrates once again that NSPA, as NATO's lead organization for multinational acquisition, support and sustainment, delivers effective and cost-efficient multinational solutions to nations, while reinforcing European industrial capacities. This marks the first major move by Boeing’s newly appointed CEO, Kelly Ortberg, who took the helm in August 2024. Colbert’s departure comes as Boeing faces serious financial strain, with the defense division accumulating billions in cost overruns on contracts like the KC-46 aerial tanker and the Air Force One replacements, dragging down earnings with losses approaching $1 billion. 🔳 Ortberg stressed that restoring customer trust and improving operational execution are now top priorities, as Pentagon leaders have voiced concerns about Boeing’s continued delays. The U.S. State Department has approved the sale of 36 AH-64E Apache helicopters to South Korea for an estimated cost of $3.5 billion. This approval came from the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA), which indicated that the sale would enhance both nations' security and contribute to political stability in the Indo-Pacific region. The deal includes additional equipment such as engines, radar systems, and night vision sensors. South Korea aims to upgrade its military capabilities, particularly in response to threats from North Korea, and plans to replace older Cobra helicopters with the new Apaches. South Korea already operates 36 Apache helicopters purchased in 2017 and has a strategy in place to upgrade their current attack helicopters. Collins Aerospace, an RTX (NYSE: RTX) business, successfully demonstrated mobile, distributed command and control during a series of fires, networking and mission command experiments at INDOPACOM’s Valiant Shield exercise. Collins partnered with the U.S. Army’s 1st Multi-Domain Task Force to conduct the experiments—inside a ground vehicle—to rapidly reconfigure and deploy capabilities based on evolving mission needs. The mission command ‘on-the-move’ concept uses commercial and military communications networks to provide access to multiple intelligence sources. To ‘make sense’ of the data from various sources, the company used an AI/ML battle management software. This created fused situational awareness that can be shared with bilateral and joint force partners. Valiant Shield is a biennial field training that builds real-world proficiency in sustaining U.S. forces through detecting, locating, tracking, and engaging units at sea, in the air, on land, and in cyberspace in response to a range of mission areas. The exercise is one of the largest United States military war games held in the Pacific Ocean. Aircraft from Valiant Shield deployed on missions ranging across the Pacific all the way to Alaska.
