    MODESTO INTERNATIONAL ARCHITECTURE FESTIVAL HISTORY

For the last five years, the Sierra Valley Chapter of the American Institute of Architects has partnered with the Modesto Art Museum, the Modesto Film Society, and the State Theatre to host the AIA Sierra Valley Architecture Film Festival. During the first season, 2008, the Festival presented four films along with exhibits and talks about architecture and architects to several hundred people in the Modesto area. In 2009 there were three evenings of exhibits and movies.

In 2010, the Festival was modified to a Thursday - Saturday event. The Festival began on Thursday evening with a demonstration and presentation by Spirit of Space from Chicago, Ill. and continued on Friday with an Architecture Cafe in the morning and architecture tours during the day. Friday evening was the short film program and reception. Saturday continued the festival fun with a landscape lecture, a walking tour, religious architecture driving tour, and concluded in the evening with a reception, architectural photography exhibit, and movie program.

The festival has become and important outreach effort of the AIASV. They are reaching out to the community and doing an excellent job of informing the local population about architects and their work. They have made a successful effort to include student architects at the college level, displaying their work in the lobby of the theatre and providing them with passes to the festival. The festival has reached out to many allied professions, city and urban planners, landscape architects, contractors, photographers, and those who enjoy and are interested in architecture, whether it be classic, post modern, or modernist era design.

The mission of the Modesto Art Museum is to provide quality visual arts experiences and to help people develop their aesthetic understanding so they can enjoy and find meaning in the visual arts. 1. To provide quality visual arts experiences We organize and host a variety of enjoyable and stimulating events and activities that present visual arts to the people of Modesto. These include exhibitions, performances, readings, tours, and movies in every possible setting including galleries, public and private institutions, businesses, theatres, gardens, parks, streets, schools, churches, libraries, homes, online, and in traveling exhibits. As much as possible we do this with a wide variety of community partners and either free or of low cost. 2. To help people develop their aesthetic understanding so they can enjoy and find meaning in the visual arts. Through workshops, demonstrations, classes, lectures, publications, readings, and symposia we teach people how to experience the visual arts. This includes the abilities to analyze, to critique, to comprehend, to enjoy, to gain insight, to inspire creativity, and to draw meaning from works of art. As part of this process, the museum breaks down the usual distinctions between artists, curators, and viewers inviting everyone to invest in creative interaction and dialogue.
