Most ‘Compostable’ Bioplastics Are Anything But, Says New Report Many consumers are confused about the terms "biocompostable" and "biodegradable" when it comes to bioplastics. They might be surprised to learn that certified plastic cups or containers labeled as compostable often cannot be composted in backyard compost bins. These items typically require controlled conditions available only at commercial composting facilities, which are not accessible to most communities. According to voluntary American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standards, a material is considered fully decomposed if more than 90% of it can pass through a 2-millimeter sieve. This creates a loophole that allows compost to be filled with microplastics and nanoplastics. Misled by these labels, many consumers continue to dispose of bioplastics in home compost bins. Even if these bioplastics decompose completely, they can release toxic additives such as PFAS and endocrine disruptors like BPA, which are not banned by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for food-contact materials. A new report by the NGO Beyond Plastics reveals that only a small portion of bioplastics labeled as compostable can actually be composted by consumers. These "compostable" bioplastics require commercial composting facilities to break down properly, yet many of these facilities refuse to accept compostable foodware and packaging due to concerns about microplastic and chemical contamination. The report highlights the lack of federal standards in the U.S., leading to voluntary bioplastic certifications controlled by chemical companies and bioplastic manufacturers. It also notes that global standards are weak. Furthermore, the report states that bioplastics often take longer to decompose than the industry claims, and when they do break down, they leave behind toxic micro- and nanoplastics in the compost, which can enter the food chain and pose health risks to people and animals. The plastics industry disputes these claims. This case does not stand for the proposition that the FDA has the ability to shut down ALL stem cell clinics. This case is a very narrow fact situation where the defendant clinic was not following the rules that applied to the exemption claimed. The truth of the matter is that the stem cell extraction and retransplantation procedure using stem cells extracted from the patients own fat cells produces a very substandard stem cell in the first place. There isn’t a single reason under the sun for physicians doing this procedure to obtain weak and aged stem cells. There isn’t any question that the FDA’s interpretation was correct from day one of this litigation. The trial judge ignore the rules and facts to create a tortured decision. Except for a very small exception, stem cells are virtually always an experimental drug. As an experimental drug, physicians are not allowed to make any representations that the drug has the ability to cure or successfully treat any condition. As an experimental drug, however, in certain cases of life threatening illness, injury or disease a patient and doctor have the ability to use a medical grade and properly manufactured and tested stem cell under the scope of the “Right to Try” Federal Legislation The other ways that medical grade Allogeneic stem cells can be used experimentally under the proper serious conditions circumstances is under another piece of federal legislation known as “Expanded Access”. Unlike the Right to Try usages for Life Threatening issues, the Expanded Access requires the FDA’s prior approval to treat. Virtually all properly prepared requests are granted by the FDA within 24 hours. Expanded Access applies to single patients and under proper circumstances can be expanded to up to 100 patients and eventually up to 1,000 patients - leading to clinical approval. The third method of treatment approved by FDA is using Compassionate Use exception under limited circumstances- again this requires approval in advance of treatment. There is so much false information spread about the experimental use of atem cells and which stem cells are the most potent that it highly important that you seek out legal counsel to lead you down the safe pathway created by Congress. If someone tells you there is no legal way to administer Allogeneic medical grade experimental stem cells - they simply don’t know what they are talking about! #stemcells
