I am excited to announce that one of Access Discovery Bio’s first clients is Cache DNA based out of San Carlos, CA. Cache has an exciting new technology that allows for the “Caching” of DNA and RNA, allowing them to be stored at ambient room temperature. Caching can be done on a small scale with various tubes or can be completely integrated into existing automated technologies that handle plates for working at scale. This is a profound development in my eyes after decades of both working in biorepositories and shipping frozen samples all over the world. I have personally witnessed sample evaporation and loss despite long term cold storage. I’ve seen the dramatic rise in costs not only to create and maintain freezer farms but also to safely ship frozen samples which can often dip into the thousands for a single shipment. I have personally been on call and had to travel into a lab at 2am to recover samples in a failed freezer or during a power outage. I have also worked in the lab having to use various techniques to properly freeze or thaw samples to work with them. For many reasons, I see this as a transformational technology. Who doesn’t like to save massive amounts of money? Everyone does of course and this comes with the added benefits of reducing carbon footprints and helping the environment. Michael Becich and his team at Cache are a great group of scientists who have created something truly beneficial to basic science. Cache is presently offering free demo kits to select customers while supplies last. The biotech industry is changing in a way not enough people are talking about. This realization came about after I finally had some time to reflect on my time at #bio2024 in San Diego a few weeks ago. I actually spent most of my time at the amazing Bullpen with my incredible dovetail biopartners team with a focus on growing our network to attract future clients and partners. But while doing this I noticed two trends different from last year… 1. Many startups are streamlining operations by keeping a core C-suite and outsourcing all other functions. This strategic move allows them to allocate resources efficiently, crucial in early stages where fundraising is challenging. By outsourcing research functions, startups can stay agile and focus on core competencies, accelerating growth. 2. Collaboration is now pivotal. With financial constraints, businesses are joining forces to innovate and reduce costs. Startups and large pharma alike are finding that partnerships enable them to access new markets, technologies, and talent that would be challenging to leverage alone. Both of these things seem beneficial for my company’s future… but I’m actually more concerned. Concerned about how scientific talent is going to be used moving forward. — So… With companies relying more on outsourced work and partnerships to get things done, the hiring landscape is poised for significant change. Even large pharmaceutical companies are increasingly turning to outsourcing. This shift raises important questions for wet and dry lab scientists who may have been laid off and are now seeking roles in biotech research teams. Will they need to adjust their expectations and consider opportunities with contract research organizations (CROs) or other non-traditional roles? And this isn’t even getting into the whole “#AI is going to replace humans” debate. (My 2 cents here, AI is in it’s infancy and promises far too much right now. We still need smart humans to extract insights and make decisions.) Navigating this new “lean” landscape requires proactive strategies where professionals can still find fulfilling roles that then help companies thrive. — I'm committed to hosting events that provide value to the biotech community, and want to keep opening up discussions on tough topics. Wow, Tempus AI will start trading today with a start price of $37/share giving it a market cap of $6B, raising over $400M. Great sign in my opinion for: - Element Biosciences: IPO market is open for good genomics stories. - Illumina: Tempus' primary NGS provider. - Companies in the genomics data + AI space: sets a new valuation level, there were very few prior exit stories above $100M. 👏👏👏

In an article today: ‘Chip wreck – Intel is on the rocks’, The Economist Schumpeter columnist argues that Intel’s current woes are the continuation of a long-standing problem due to the fact that its previous management, since the late 2000s, has been a string of accountant CEOs who missed several big changes which have been shaping the semiconductor industry, in particular the shift from computing using PCs (Intel’s forte) to mobile phones (which wasn’t, and still isn’t); the change in the industry structure away from Intel’s integrated model to a disaggregated model, with separate firms specializing in chip design and others, such as TSMC, specializing in manufacturing; and thirdly, a series of manufacturing mishaps, leading to delays in the delivery of microprocessors, allowing competitors to steal market share. These errors, Schumpeter argues, were compounded by Intel’s management missing the evolution of cloud computing from Central Processing Units, in which Intel has specialized for a long time, to the Graphics Processing Units underpinning the AI revolution. The implication, Schumpeter argues, is that technologist CEOs would have been better placed to spot these developments early and to have acted upon them in a more timely fashion. But I think the success or failure of a company has much more to do with the intellectual caliber, skillsets and character of its senior management (together with a good dose of luck) than does any semi-arbitrary label applied to them. America’s first billionaire, John D Rockefeller, is often described as ‘an oilman’, but I don’t believe that Rockefeller actually got his hands dirty with oil ever in his life. The reality is that Rockefeller was an accountant – just a bean-counter, but he counted his beans very carefully.
