Third-angle projection always made sense to me. Every textbook has clear illustrations of unfolding the glass box. First-angle projection, on the other hand, looked like someone rearranged the views for no apparent reason. And I could never keep the symbols for each projection straight. I've been reading old textbooks in preparation for writing a CAD tutorial. Last night, in chapter 7 of Technical Drawing, 10th edition (Giesecke, et al. 1997) I read, "In this case, [first-angle projection] the observer always looks 𝑡ℎ𝑟𝑜𝑢𝑔ℎ 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑜𝑏𝑗𝑒𝑐𝑡 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑡𝑜 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑝𝑙𝑎𝑛𝑒𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝑝𝑟𝑜𝑗𝑒𝑐𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛." Third-angle projection is what you would get if you walked around the object with a camera, taking pictures with visible light. Light travels from a source near or behind the observer, maybe sunlight coming from behind you or a flash on or near the camera. The object reflects the light back toward the camera, where it is detected by the image sensor, or in older cameras, by film. First-angle projection is like an X-ray. If you break your arm, the ER X-ray tech will position it on a film cassette (nowadays usually a digital imaging plate similar to the sensor in a digital camera) and will position the X-ray tube so the beam travels from the tube, through the arm, to the film or sensor without being reflected. Since bone is radiopaque, it casts an X-ray shadow. First-angle projection is like looking at a shadow of the object. Third-angle projection is what most of us see. First-angle projection is what Superman sees! Now how to understand and remember the symbols for first- and third-angle projection? I found the best explanation at: https://lnkd.in/g3jtAAqa In both symbols, the concentric circles represent the front view of a truncated cone with the smaller flat surface pointed at the viewer. The trapezoid represents the side view. Which side? Since the smaller flat surface is the front view, the right, left, top, and bottom views will all look the same. The key to remember: In the third-angle projection, the sides of the trapezoid form an angle pointing in: toward the center of the circles. In the first-angle projection, the sides form an angle pointing out away from the circles. One more small thing confused me. In the first-angle projection symbol, if you're looking at the shadow of a cone, you wouldn't see the smaller circle representing the smaller flat surface. Why isn't the smaller circle a hidden line? Books and websites only said because, by convention, it's not. I found a more intuitive explanation. Returning to the X-ray analogy, the greater the thickness of the tissue being X-rayed, the more radiation it absorbs, and the denser the shadow. If you X-ray a cone with the base resting on the film, the thickness will increase from the base to the apex. In the case of a truncated cone, there will be a definite line at the diameter where it was cut.

A slow, heavy product that weighs down your t-shirt and duplicates your phone's functionality probably won't win over the masses. But, wearables can catch on once the functionality, price and form factor reaches that magical intersection point. I gave up a very pretty standard watch with a one-year battery for a clunky Apple watch. Even though I have to plug it in every night, and it's three times the size on my wrist, the trade-off is acceptable. The Apple Watch allows me to do more and now I feel lost without it. In a report by Mix published last month (August 19), shared by Wired yesterday (September 13), archiving specialists Iron Mountain Media and Archive Services shared their results from a survey of its vaults – which contain hard drives belonging to music industry clients, among others. The survey revealed that “around one-fifth” of its inventory are unreadable. “That means there are historic sessions from the early to mid-’90s that are dying,” claims Iron Mountain Media’s Robert Koszela to Mix. “In our line of work, if we discover an inherent problem with a format, it makes sense to let everybody know,” Koszela, who previously worked at record label Universal Music Group, continues. “It may sound like a sales pitch, but it’s not; it’s a call for action.” Prior to the 1990s, the majority of studio recordings and masters were stored on magnetic tape, which were handed to storage once used to press mass copies of albums on vinyl, CD, and cassette tape, among other formats. Magnetic tape requires optimum storage conditions to prolong its life – otherwise, deterioration of the tape is more than likely to happen, rendering it partially damaged or unplayable for future use. Williamson/The Washington Post via Getty Images Since the mid-1990s, music labels had begun to turn to hard drive storage to store either digitally-recorded music produced with digital audio workstations (DAWs), or digital tape transfers of past catalogues – with the belief that such storage is more resilient to aging than magnetic tape. Iron Mountain Media warns that it is not the case, and that they have found hard drives from that period suseptible to any number of issues. “It’s so sad to see a project come into the studio, a hard drive in a brand-new case with the wrapper and the tags from wherever they bought it still in there,” Koszela says. “Next to it is a case with the safety drive in it. Everything’s in order. And both of them are bricks.” The loss of studio masters has been an issue since 2019, when it was revealed that over 700 more artists were believed to have lost their masters in a 2008 warehouse fire at Universal Studios in Hollywood. Among the list of artists included Beck, who shared with NME that an entire album’s worth of Hank Williams covers he recorded had perished in the fire, among other rare masters. “It was something I did maybe a year before I did ‘Sea Change’. As some of you know, what got me into the whole AI thing is the result of going through some old files to do with an adult coloring book project. This was a project I had worked on several years ago which went South. When I looked at my files, I realized they were poor. I decided to see if I could solve the problem with AI. I did a search and found a video course on how to create adult coloring books using Canva AI. That’s how my coloring book came about. https://lnkd.in/ez3S3FV3 When it comes time to do my own course, I'm going to be using materials that I've learned, but I'm going to go beyond it because as I've said in other posts, AI won't do everything. I will have to train it but even then, it will only go so far. Beyond that, I will have to make use of Blender to create the scenes I want. The downside is the amount of time it takes to create an illustration. The upside will be the amount of control. And the last bit for now is working on my membership site where I will offer coloring pages, rather than books and the goal is to provide more flexibility for those of you who want color in different categories.
