$2 BILLION IS SPENT ON STUDENTS REPEATING A GRADE EVERY YEAR BECAUSE OF PROBLEMS RELATED TO READING [3] About 22% of American adults have minimal literacy. Nearly 2/3 of this group didn't complete high-school. Adults with low literacy levels are more likely to be homeless, unemployed, or hold very low paying jobs.”[1] The US Dept. of Health and Humans Services states that every year, $2 billion is spent on students repeating a grade because of problems related to reading.[3] The US Dept. of Education says 60% of US prison inmates are illiterate and 85% of all juvenile offenders have reading problems.[4]
Groups like “Reach Out And Read” have been developed by pediatricians to make reading a part of early childhood checkups. They believe that “34% of American children entering kindergarten today lack the basic language skills they need to learn to read. And children living in poverty are especially at risk. Children who start out with reading difficulties are more likely to remain poor readers and ultimately fail in school.”[5] Over 1 million children drop out of school each year, costing the nation over $240 billion in lost earnings, forgone tax revenues, and expenditures for social services.[6]

The SDA Foundation is a 501(c)3 non-profit that supports quality programs and innovative classroom practices. The mission is to support the unique culture and quality programs of the San Dieguito Academy by generating financial resources and promoting active parental and community involvement.

The Foundation provides essential funding to support the ever increasing costs of quality education. The funding picture for schools has changed dramatically over the past few years. The needs of our school have far outpaced available funding from the district and state. Today educational foundations all over California are filling the gap between limited public funds and the dollars needed to support educational goals.

The SDA Foundation does this through donations and various fund-raising efforts throughout the school year. The belief is that every student benefits from the united efforts of parents, teachers, administrators, students and community members working together to promote educational excellence.

The Foundation is the support and coordinating organization for volunteer and fundraising activities at SDA. All SDA parent groups, teams and councils including Athletics, Academic, Music, Theater, Student Support and Grad Nite operate under the non-profit umbrella of the SDA Foundation.
