Bentonite clay, commonly found in Colorado, can absorb water and expand up to several times its original size. This can be disastrous for concrete structures built on top, causing cracks and uneven floors.   2. According to the Colorado Geological Survey, “Bentonite and montmorillonite (weathered volcanic ash) clays can expand up to 20% by volume when exposed to water and exert a force of up to 30,000 pounds-per-square-foot, more than enough to break up any structure they encounter. One Denver suburb has the dubious distinction of suffering 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐮𝐚𝐥 𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐥𝐨𝐬𝐬 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐬𝐨𝐢𝐥 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐲 𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧.”    3. New Septic Regulations in Sonoma County Sonoma County staff have implemented necessary changes to clarify regulations, address gaps, and introduce new rules focused on stream or river impairments and Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDLs)—the limit of pollutants a waterway can handle. The updated rules are designed to prevent new or expanded developments from harming water quality or impacting existing septic systems. If you’re not planning any new development, the changes won’t affect you unless your septic system is failing or in need of repairs. The new manual provides more options for fixing or upgrading failing systems. Key updates include clarifying existing reserve areas, reducing the percentage of replacement allowed under a repair permit, and transferring site evaluation tasks to design professionals. Three watersheds are affected, Russian River, Petaluma River, and Sonoma Creek. Here is the Petaluma map showing all the waterways that are impacted by the changes. The Russian River Special Provision Impairment Areas (Impairment Area) consists of parcels that are completely or partially within 600 linear feet from the top of watercourse bank in the horizontal (map) direction on either side of an impaired water bodies. The applicability of these Special Provisions is determined by the location of the dispersal system. The OWTS dispersal system must be completely or partially within 600 linear feet from the top of the watercourse bank in the horizontal (map) direction on either side of the watercourse to be subject to these Special Provisions. OWTS with effluent dispersal systems entirely outside the 600 linear foot distance are not subject to these requirements. What does it take to paint a tank that houses local drinking water? A few months back, we were given the opportunity to paint a tank up in the Boise Foothills for our local water municipality. A project like this is a big undertaking, and it requires meticulous planning, skilled labor, and adherence to strict safety and quality standards to ensure both the integrity of the structure and the safety of the water supply. For starters, safety always comes first, especially when it involves the interior of a city's drinking water supply. This project was no different, and we implemented rigorous safety measures for the safety of both our team and the water supply. These included personal protective equipment (PPE), dust control to minimize airborne particles, and specialized lighting (yes, it's dark in there)! Moreover, working in a drinking water environment requires specific products designed to meet stringent standards for housing potable water and withstand low temperatures, especially during winter. Another concern was the potential presence of lead in older tanks, so we took a careful approach to mitigate health and environmental risks. Our team employed a strategy of pressure washing and patch priming without disturbing the existing coatings, thus avoiding exposure to any lead-based substances.
