Often when a bridge is referenced, it is commonly linked to a physical element tying two places together often overcoming an impassable pathway. Strong bridges can also create smooth transitions from the past to the future. Bridges are not incorporated for the sake of it, but instead the justification of a bridge has the power to unite communities and bring voices to the underrepresented. Bridges can reconnect broken urban fabric, challenging and resolving the divisions created by systematically designed disenfranchisement in communities, through red-lining. In the heart of Pride Month, I find myself immersed in a sea of thoughts, pondering over the essence of pride and how my role at HDR can serve as a beacon of hope for my LGBTQ+ brethren. HDR, a global titan in the realm of architecture and engineering, is not just about constructing buildings and city infrastructure. We are the architects of society, molding sustainable and inclusive urban landscapes that echo our commitment to social equity, diversity, and safe spaces for all. Architecture, in its truest form, is a reflection of our values, dreams, and shared identity. It’s not just about bricks and mortar; it’s about building bridges of acceptance and equality. The architectural landscape has evolved, embracing inclusive design as a potent weapon against oppression and a catalyst for positive change. Here’s how we, at HDR, can empower our LGBTQ+ communities in the work we do every day: 1. Sanctuaries of Inclusion: Housing is not just about four walls and a roof; it’s about creating a sanctuary where everyone feels at home. Vancouver, a city renowned for its diversity and progressive values, can pioneer in crafting such inclusive spaces. Architects can design homes that transcend functional needs and prioritize inclusivity with features like gender-neutral bathrooms, accessible entrances, and communal spaces. 2. Battling Homelessness: The homelessness crisis in Vancouver is a grim reality, with LGBTQ+ youth bearing the brunt of it. By joining forces with local organizations, architects can design shelters and transitional housing that cater to the unique challenges faced by queer individuals, ensuring safety, dignity, and self-acceptance. 3. Beyond Blueprints: The vibrant LGBTQ+ community of Vancouver is a kaleidoscope of events and advocacy efforts. Architects can actively participate by attending these events, partnering with community organizations, and weaving LGBTQ+ narratives into urban planning discussions. 4. Public Spaces of Acceptance: Public spaces, from parks to community centers, should be a haven for all. Architects can ensure privacy, safety, and visibility by designing spaces that accommodate diverse identities. I started SJS STUDIOS INC. ,a boutique architecture firm, in 2020 at the height of the pandemic. The idea was to create a firm with a studio culture, based on collaboration, learning and mentorship, so I quickly searched for a space that inspired this concept. As an introvert by nature, I do value solitude, but I feel strongly that there is so much more to be gained by being immersed by other colleagues and collaboraters, because that is where the learning moments happen! Tools™ presents the National Construction Codes (NCC) as interactive graphics that are easy to understand for designers and tradies alike. And Tools™ links are easily sharable via QR-Codes. Thankfully, using Vectorworks’ Hyperlink tool (*), you have a built-in QR-code generator. Simply: – Select a hyperlink object. – Choose the QR-code function. – Choose a heading (if required). – Copy and paste the Building Tools app link. – Select the size of the QR-code. – And insert the code. This firm challenged AI(MidJourney) to 3 tasks. Floor Plans. Renderings. Text Brief. Who won? When put to a public(MidJourney members) vote.....AI won every challenge. Well in summary the future may end up helping us write specifications through something called Artificial Narrow Intelligence. It may help in things like research, however this will eventually start to take jobs away from highly specialized jobs or tasks. The video brilliantly discusses how yes we may end up being replaced in certain tasks but the one factor it won't is Liability. Where do you sit on the debate? Its already here and improving.

Every project we work on starts with drawings. If they exist, we study them to see exactly how a space is constructed. We can see what is possible -- what walls can be removed, what can be repurposed, where plumbing can be located, and more. If there are no drawings, we create them. A huge part of design is knowing the exact proportions and measurements of a space. Our goal is to design spaces that can realistically be built. Please come by the POST Houston today at 3:00-7:00 PM and explore the exhibition by Gerald D. Hines College of Architecture and Design University of Houston ARCH 5500 titled, HOT TICKET: Strategies for cooling transit stops and adjacencies in Houston's Second Ward. Studio led by Celeste Ponce Drawing by Rachel Gutierrez The projects examine the social and cultural constructs that maintain community life, economic, and mobilization networks through taking a close look at the Second Ward's history and cultural landscape. Studying a section along Harrisburg Boulevard to Manchester’s fence line community, documents a deep and granular understanding of the Second Ward. By examining the community’s fabrication and maintenance through photojournalistic documentation, cartographic and diagrammatic visualizations, interviews, and site visits, the research surveys the topographical sedimentation of Harrisburg.   The studio’s provocation argues that incorporating the complexity of these relation­ships along new transit lines, including transit lines connecting Houston’s East Side to Mexico, is vital to a more hospitable alternative to commercialized development.   Houston Public Media recently published an investigation looking into the impact of extreme heat on METRO riders in Houston. Recently, I had the pleasure of taking my son to the Texas Science and Natural History Museum on the UT Austin campus. Despite its small size, the museum, with its Art Deco influence, exudes a stoic presence both inside and out. As an architect, I perceive buildings differently than most. I focus on the details, the lighting, and the emotions a building evokes. Understanding the how and why of a structure excites me—it's a passion that, as design professionals, we need to feel deeply, even if it sometimes drives my wife a little crazy. Then, I see my two-year-old son, bursting with raw excitement as he charges into the great hall. He lets out a roar as he nears the 33-foot T-Rex on display. In that moment, everything else fades away, and I'm completely absorbed in his joy. After we returned home, I reflected on how that building brought me so much joy. The combination of the architecture and the exhibits created a memorable experience. Isn't that what we're all seeking? The experience, the emotion, the joy... In my work as an architect here at DLR Group, we strive to bring joy to everyone who interacts with the environments we create. This joy can stem from the building itself or from what occurs within its walls. It's about crafting spaces that foster enjoyment and growth for those inside. While we don't always get the chance to work on grand civic projects, we make it a mission to infuse every project with that same sense of joy. #DLRGroup #Design

Advantages of Small Lot Mixed-Use Design 📐 Small lot mixed-use buildings can present opportunities for the end-user and can parallel a city’s development goals. If you consider the Near Southside neighborhood in Fort Worth, the area provides numerous examples of this type of design. The two-story mixed-use building (photo) is a terrific example of a smaller lot. The building is just over 8,700 SF and we designed it to include Dr. Tillman's dental practice on the first floor and boutique apartments on the second floor.   If you’re not familiar with mixed-use design, these types of buildings feature a business (retail, medical, professional) on the ground floor and apartments on the second floor. The rental income from the apartment units can assist the owner in paying for their building. Small mixed-use lots have their challenges, including building orientation, pedestrian/vehicle movement, tenant requirements, and code interpretations - to name a few. Despite some of the challenges, the smaller lot parameters still allow for design diversity. Are there any advantages to working with smaller mixed-use lots? One major advantage of this type of development is ownership by a small business. In other words, they can be tailored to the growing housing demand while accommodating smaller business entities.   Curious if a smaller lot can work for you? Considered a mixed-use building? Combining architecture, placemaking, and artistry has been a cornerstone of Atelier AL and our approach to forming a design practice. Initially, founder Adam Lanman, AIA, NCARB, collaborated with Downtown OKC Partnership and Oklahoma City University School of Law on "Skyline Timeline," an urban placemaking project that remains a highlight of our early work. The design, fabrication, and installation process and its lasting impact remain relevant to our work today. The relationship between art and architecture is deeply intertwined, with each discipline enriching the other. Architecture, at its best, transcends mere functionality to become an expressive art form, creating spaces that evoke emotion, tell stories, and enhance the human experience. Art, on the other hand, often finds its most compelling canvases within architectural spaces, where it can interact with the environment, context, and users in dynamic ways. Art informs our architectural work by encouraging a perspective that values aesthetics, creativity, and emotional resonance. Conversely, architecture informs our artistic endeavors by grounding them in spatial considerations, functionality, and context. This symbiotic relationship ensures that Atelier AL's designs are holistic, addressing both practical and aspirational desires.
