I was honored to be invited as one of a few dozen disability experts, academia professionals, transportation industry experts, and other professionals that were brought together to discuss applications of technology, identify knowledge gaps and opportunities, and highlight barriers to implementation. During the workshop, I moderated a group discussion on "ITS, Wireless Technologies, and Mobile Computing".
A summary report was developed to document the workshop results, and widely disseminated to the broader highway/transportation and disability communities. The aim was to encourage further discussion regarding the development of technological applications for pedestrians and travelers with disabilities. These discussions led to the identification of future research needs and opportunities to enhance the transportation accessibility for all Americans. -

Hosted at the White House by the U.S. CTO Aneesh Chopra, FCC and Department of Commerce, the event netted two collaborative research efforts: one on web accessibility and one on geo-data initiatives for accessible transportation.
In the 90-day challenge that followed the White House meeting, I served as a key leader of a collaborative research effort and editor of the group's report, "Data-Enabled Travel", which outlined research related to accessible transportation: user needs, information ecosystem and business models, policy, standards, data environment, technologies, and implementation support. I co-presented the results of this to the U.S. Federal CIO. As a result, an effort was begun at the U.S. Department of Transportation, called "Accessible Transportation Technologies Research Initiative (ATTRI)" (still active today).
