HOW AI CAN MAKE YOU A BETTER PROCESS SAFETY EXPERT Large language models face many difficulties ― largely to do with the quality of the data they use. Nevertheless, it appears as if they will play an increasingly important role in the process safety business. But another process safety expert using AI will.

When I started off as a Production Reporting Analyst with an energy company in the #NorthSea, we didn't get any #PI training: you had to just pick things up as you went along. That works for some of us who enjoy experimenting, but for the majority they often feel under-equipped. One PI #Datalink spreadsheet took 25 mins to load. Every day. You set it going, went for a walk, made yourself a coffee, and then *eventually* you were ready to start the day. After the weekend, you had to do this for Friday, Saturday and Sunday! After three years, I fixed it to run in <5 minutes. Ten years later, that's 1200 hours freed up to do more useful things than wait for a spreadsheet to load! I have sat with various Ops specialists - #Environmental focal points, #Process and #Mechanical Engineers, #Hydrocarbon Accountants and others - who had not been trained to use PI and other digital tools that are at their very fingertips. And in the long run, this generates all kinds of inefficiencies. Project People please hear this. Building an asset without the data to maintain is ridiculous. Most EPCs are also offering Engineering and Operations services. If I were the client, I am awarding Engineering services and brownfield projects to the EPCs who are data centric thinking about sustainability.

🙏Process Safety Leadership requires curiosity and humility. And the ability to acknowledge your mistakes. 😬 Here's one of mine that demonstrates the importance of understanding your basis of safety. In the early 2000s I was production manager for a COMAH chemical plant. One of my responsibilities was issuing permits for high hazard tasks. The annual reactor catalyst change required confined space working over 7 days, and I had safely overseen this several times. High pressure water-jetting was used to remove the spent catalyst from the reactor tubes. This normally passed without incident. But on one ill-fated occasion, the jetting team exited the reactor mid-task complaining of feeling unwell. A gas test of the reactor showed low ppm levels of chemical in the work area. And the temperature of the space seemed high. The entry had taken place without the use of breathing apparatus, as it always had been. There had never been readings of chemical in the past. And the work method and preparation, on the face of it, seemed the same as the previous 20 years of execution. The subsequent investigation however identified two key factors:- 🔹️The confined space was warmer than previous entries, despite having been ventilated/cooled for the usual length of time. Work conditions were more humid and tiring than normal. 🔹️Spent catalyst had built up on the scaffolding chute that had been erected under the reactor to direct washings into a skip. This was because the angle of the chute was shallower and the clearance to the manway smaller than in the past. Fumes were likely being released from the catalyst pile and contaminating the confined space above. Furthermore:- 🔻The work method hadn't specified the importance of keeping the chute clear of catalyst and how to achieve that through its construction, and regular checks throughout the work. The design was left to the scaffolders alone. 🔻A maximum wet bulb temperature for reactor entry hadn't been specified, and there were no time limits for working based on regular measurement. Whether the temperature was acceptable was left to the permit issuer's judgement. 🔻And use of breathing apparatus until two consecutive gas test results showed non-detectable readings of chemical wasn't mandated. These were all changes I introduced to the work method. The wider learning for me however was the importance of understanding:- 🔸️WHY a procedure is written as it is, and 🔸️WHAT makes a task safe....what is the underlying basis of safety? Only when you have this understanding can you:- 🔸️Notice any potentially hazardous changes in the way a task is performed 🔸️Properly explain the task to others so they can keep themselves safe as well.
