Experience or entertainment? Loaded words. One feels sophisticated and one feels…. less so. In a space where brand building is the focus, maybe those words don’t matter. It’s about engagement. On a short trip to Shanghai this week, I witnessed a culture of engagement - an openness and desire to not just experience things, but to be entertained by them. There’s no shame in having fun. I visited the Arc'teryx store after a tip off from a local brand leader, who had described it as an exemplar for the city’s expectations of brand and retail. The store in Jing’an is first and foremost a themed environment. Two words to scare a designer. Good design isn’t themed.. Is it? The store doesn’t settle on one thing. Product is the thread, but the experience shifts between Disney, Abbot Kinney, the Barbican Curve Gallery and an On Running flagship. Quite the mix. Themed spaces (actual fake rocks, gasp!) provide a counterpoint to the heavily curated merchandising. Spaces are human scale. They are all different. They feel like you have time to linger, absorb and then easily allow you to move on. Most importantly they let you think. Maybe physical retail is learning from digital? I can’t help thinking this contradictory wash of experiences helps to satisfy a curiosity that is accustomed to swiping between modes with no single point of entry or conclusion - an omnidirectional blend of inspiration, immersion, education, reward. Thankfully the physical and digital divide has moved beyond misguided discussions of where to locate screens or what to put on them in a store.. a disappointing assumption that consumers want to spend time tied to a device and working hard to connect with a brand, because it’s the only engagement pattern we know. Engagement appears in multiple ways and a better understanding of the reality of behaviour is developing. Maybe brand experiences are about to shake off the weight and get a little more… entertaining.
