"There is nothing permanent except change" — Heraclitus As more and more of our clients are requesting Change Leadership Pathwayz, I'm reminded of a conversation I had early in my career with my favorite transformational leader. He had successfully led three major turnarounds with large organizations (including 2 universities). I asked him how he strategically led dramatic change (from scandal and financial ruin) to continued growth and success. He told me followed Kotter's Change Model. As he led his final large-scale turnaround over the course of 3 years, I took a frontrow seat to observe, ask questions, and take notes of this Change Model in action. A Chance Encounter, a 500-Mile Friendship, and a Reminder to Connect Scrolling through Facebook last week, a familiar name caught my eye – Dr. Joelle Hood, Ed.D. A fellow leadership trainer I'd connected with years ago before moving from Southern California to Northern California. A flurry of messages later, and we were making plans for dinner, a reunion long overdue. Sunday, I carved out precious time from my weekend to accommodate Joelle's busy schedule. And it was worth every second. Joy filled the air as we caught up on life and shared business insights with Joelle's colleague, Janelle. It was a powerful reminder of the importance of connection – of reaching out, making time, and nurturing relationships, even when life takes us in different directions. This unexpected reunion taught me a valuable lesson: Be intentional about connecting. Don't let busy schedules or distance get in the way of fostering meaningful relationships. Reach out to that old friend, schedule a coffee date with a colleague, or even just send a quick message to someone you admire. You never know what amazing connections and opportunities may arise. What's the difference between a technical challenge and adaptive challenge? I appreciate this insight from Albert Wolfe: 1) Skill / technical challenges = someone has solved this sort of problem before. Just pay attention to what they did and what you’re doing and adjust your behavior toward the current “best practices.” 2) Adaptive challenges = probably no one knows the solution (yet). We will need to learn together and bravely uncover previously undiscovered barriers (mostly internal, but some external) to make huge breakthroughs. #adaptiveleaders

I really enjoy working with new organizations on their strategic planning. It is my most favorite activity. This last 2 weekends, I worked with Culture Shock San Diego to develop their One Page Strategic Plan. It was the first time I had worked with an arts organization. The learning and growing went both ways. The Culture Shock team is thoughtful, creative and fun. The team is made up of both board members and several of the members of the leadership team. It was a great mix of individuals who knew different aspects of the nonprofit. We had great conversations on several topics, and they really dug deep when they worked on their values. They have big plans and developed a big audacious hairy goal to challenge themselves as they move forward with their growth plans. With an enthusiastic BHAG comes more aggressive fundraising goals. The team was energized and ready to tackle the plan because of the clarity, alignment and focus that was created during our 2-day sessions. At the culmination of the 2 days, they had a completed one Page Strategic Plan.  Everybody knows who is accountable and what the organization needs to do to start their exciting journey. It’s important to remember strategic planning is a journey not a destination. We live in an uncertain world, so their plan is clear but set-up to change when change is required. Andrew James Smith, MA, ACC shared an article on emotional labor today (link below), and it's brought up a lot of questions I'm reflecting on. For those who work in EX/HR- this is what we learn to navigate, and influence (really well!) day after day. And, often it's what causes us burnout, feeling undervalued, and maybe even looking for a change in career over time. Why aren't more of us living careers of meaning and purpose? In April I led my first Purpose Retreat in Northern California’s scenic hills. This deeply emotional and transformative event was a milestone for me and a group of seasoned executives, top silicon valley friends I've known for many years who invited me to moderate there annual retreat. We live in a world that often pushes us to the edge, until one day we wake up and yell, “What am I doing with my life?” The data tells the story and according to Gallup, 85% of working-age individuals feel disengaged at work. So how can we tackle global challenges if our work lives feel flat and lifeless? Our retreat sought to answer this by helping each participant discover their core values and purpose in a single, intense day. The breathtaking landscapes of Northern California provided the perfect canvas for our work and for folks to disconnect from the craziness that is working in the Valley. I had everyone begin with a walking meditation to reconnect with nature, followed by creating comic strips to highlight pivotal life moments. Participants then identified personal “superpowers” and received insights from their accountability partners by sitting in a "hot chair" in the middle of the room. Imagining their 80th birthday celebration, each person then envisioned the impacts and legacies they hope to leave behind, highlighting that life’s true achievements are rarely about promotions or financial success but meaningful differences in others’ lives. A visual exploration cutting powerful images from magazines helped everyone pinpoint global issues they are passionate about, guiding them closer to understanding where their efforts are most needed and valued. The retreat ended with crafting personal Purpose Statements, which were shared with accountability partners for feedback . We concluded with a ceremony where each person publicly declared their purpose in an open circle at the edge of the water. Returning to California, where my journey of self-discovery and purpose began seven years ago, I felt a profound sense of coming full circle. Leading this retreat reinforced my life’s mission and reminded me of the powerful impact we can have when we align our careers with our deepest values. And you know what? A life of service and purpose isn’t just a dream—it’s an achievable reality. We just have to have to courage to reach out and ask for it. Be True, Be Curious, Be Driven.

Often, discussions about East Asian and Western perspectives highlight stark contrasts in thought and behavior. However, upon closer inspection, what if these supposed cultural differences are more about universal shifts in mindset that occur naturally at different life stages? In examining works like Gish Jen's Tiger Writing, where Eastern "interdependence" contrasts with Western "independence," we might typically interpret these as cultural dichotomies (link in the comments). Yet, this binary view might oversimplify a more nuanced truth—that every individual's life experience evolves from independence to interdependence as they age. In Western narratives, youth is celebrated as a time of self-discovery and individual triumph, aligning with the "independent" mindset. As Westerners age, however, there is a natural shift towards valuing community, relationships, and stability—hallmarks of the "interdependent" mindset often associated with Eastern cultures. This suggests that what we observe might not be as much a cultural difference as it is a reflection of where a society focuses within the life cycle. This perspective invites us to reconsider the way we interpret cultural differences. Instead of viewing Eastern and Western mindsets as fundamentally distinct, we might see them as emphasizing different parts of a universal human journey. Eastern cultures might not be unique in their appreciation of interdependence, but perhaps they recognize and value this life stage earlier or more consistently than their Western counterparts. Drawing on my experiences transitioning from a tech CEO in France to an executive coach in Singapore, I've observed firsthand the transformational power of midlife. This period led me to a surprising revelation: my enjoyment in nurturing potential in others, a trait that resonates with the Eastern value of collective success over individual achievement. By understanding these perspectives through the lens of life stages, we can better appreciate the richness of both approaches. It encourages a more integrated view that recognizes the value in each phase of life, irrespective of cultural backdrop. This shift in perspective could foster deeper cross-cultural understanding and appreciation, emphasizing that in every part of the world, life’s journey might follow a similar path, with cultural narratives highlighting different aspects of this universal experience.

In my program Leader as Coach, a common question is how to coach GenY. What makes it hard is when people have a block when people are different from them. Instead of saying, “Understand me”, you need to ask yourself, “What do I need to learn about them?” The conversation does not have to be difficult. You have to be creative to have a better way of communicating that resonates with them. I’ve asked some of my participants who were on GenY what is important to them, and this is what they said: 🔹 Integrating purpose and passion in their role. 🔹 Language should be casual to make them feel they are talking to a buddy. 🔹 Involving them and helping them see their value in the organization. 🔹 Explain the why behind directions and actions. 🔹 Flexibility to create options. One of the power principles I try and instill in the leaders I coach is to "make the invisible visible." It simply means that so much of what we see as "wrong" or "broken" isn't clear to others who aren't looking through our same lens. Today's column from Seth illustrates this principle better than ever. "Gas-powered leaf blowers would disappear if the smoke they belched out was black instead of invisible.
