It's all about safety: Last Thursday, the FAA launched an official communication titled: "FAA Continues to Hold Boeing Accountable for Implementing Safety and Production Quality Fixes | Federal Aviation Administration" https://lnkd.in/d969YVGz The article in a nutshell: The FAA continues to hold Boeing accountable for addressing safety and production quality issues following a comprehensive review of the company's action plan. This includes strengthening Boeing’s mandatory Safety Management System (see FAA communication dated 22.April also), simplifying processes, enhancing supplier oversight, and increasing employee training. The FAA says it has implemented increased oversight, including more safety inspectors and halting production expansion, and will conduct regular reviews to ensure Boeing’s compliance and effective implementation of changes. So the intention of the FAA’s efforts is clear: They aim to enforce a systemic change in Boeing's safety culture. And the list of measures listed in the release sound promising, covering many different areas. The question is whether they will finally achieve this: It will depend to the biggest extend on Boeing Top Management and if they REALLY implement a safety management system that works, throughout all levels of the hierarchy and across all areas of the company. Due to its importance, I would even see a control task not only for FAA but for the MoD and even the US government. And it will depend on FAA itself, whether it is capable and willing to exercise the necessary controls and - through effective audits and controls - force the system to work effectively. The last years have shown a big lack of control power by FAA in front of Boeing, so we can only hope the FAA will re-position itself again as the required independent regulatory and control instance. What do you estimate: After all that happened, how long will it take until airline passengers stop being afraid of sitting in a Boeing aircraft again? Boeing’s leadership transition to Kelly Ortberg provides the rare opportunity to take a fresh look at its business portfolio and organization. The new leadership team has a long to-do list, including exiting noncore businesses, improving its deteriorating balance sheet and increasing its responsiveness and accountability. In my latest Aviation Week Network column, I argue that phasing out Boeing Global Services—one of the three major business units reporting to the corporate CEO—would contribute to all these objectives. To be clear, I am not suggesting that Boeing divest all of BGS. My argument is to disassemble the organization, keep the core aftermarket and customer support activities, and sell the extraneous ones. Core services and proprietary parts are integral to Boeing need to be part of the company. They belong in the same structure as the OEM effort -- in BCA and BDS&S. #aerospace #aviation #MRO

The 14th Air Navigation Conference in Montreal recently brought together global aviation leaders to focus on Performance Improvement Driving Sustainability. The aim of the Conference was to reach a global consensus on performance improvement initiatives that will best allow International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), Member States and industry to address aviation’s global environmental challenges and the rapid evolution in aviation operations and technologies. The Conference saw strong collaboration, with many recommendations moving forward for tangible outcomes. The Australian delegation played a key role, with CASA’s Joe Rule co-authoring one paper, co-sponsoring nine others, and preparing briefings for over 200 working papers. ‘Our paper on flight safety and wildlife hazard risk management was well received and will be further explored by expert groups,’ Joe shared. ‘It was noted that there are opportunities for the reduction of bird and other wildlife strike hazards by applying new methodologies and technologies. ‘A lot of the recommendations will be referred to the Technical Panels and Working Groups for actioning, with many CASA technical experts participating in these panels.' ‘Most recommendations arising against the agenda items have been referred to existing expert groups for actioning, rather than requiring the establishment of new groups (one-off groups in some cases), which was a good outcome from previous practices at past conferences.
