Indiana Pork would like to thank the Indiana delegates that attended the US Swine Health Improvement Plan (US SHIP) House of Delegates meeting in Bloomington, MN. Still in the pilot phase but on the cusp of becoming a codified USDA program, US SHIP is at a critical juncture. Producer input and participation in the delegate process is a key component to the program’s continued development. Standards adopted at House of Delegates meetings become additional requirements for SHIP participation. This year, delegates voted to require participating states to report US SHIP certified sites to a site status verification database. Another adopted standard mandates site certification instead of mere enrollment to determine delegate vote allocation. This ensures only sites fully participating in SHIP by meeting the standards are eligible determining a state’s delegate numbers. Resolutions adopted at House of Delegates meetings are recommendations of topics for further exploration to determine future SHIP programming/content. Among several resolutions, SHIP delegates voted to continue testing the efficacy of a repository for the collection of all swine movement data nationally. Delegates also voted to request a group of State Animal Health Officials to work toward standardization of state swine movement record reporting requirements, and requested exploration of the possibility of a future PEDV health status certification program for US SHIP.

The rule clarifies existing standards for livestock care and introduces new requirements, particularly for avian species. Key OLPS Updates: - Livestock Living Conditions: Clearer requirements for indoor and outdoor access, promoting natural behaviors. - Avian Species: New welfare standards for birds, ensuring adequate space and outdoor access. - Consistency in Enforcement: Clear guidelines for transportation, handling, and harvesting, ensuring all producers meet the same high standards. The OLPS Final Rule, effective January 2025, promotes transparency and creates a fair marketplace for organic producers.
