“Alex is a gifted thought leader with a rare combination of patience, entrepreneurial expertise, and intellectual prowess. Alex served as my hiring manager on an Office of the CEO search and throughout our partnership, became an influential mentor I will always admire. I was consistently impressed by his ability to solve seemingly impossible problems and his empathetic approach to offering and receiving feedback. I eagerly seek Alex's insight and counsel regarding best practices and he would be an asset to any organization seeking the same.”

What do you do if you want to become a thought leader in healthcare management and build your personal brand?
You can identify topics that may be valuable to readers by using Google Trends, which shows up-and-coming search topics (e.g. use the word "healthcare" to see healthcare topics). In addition, you can look at X/Twitter and Google News to see what type of social media posts and articles are getting traction within a topic. Finally, you can check Amazon's book charts within a topic to get a sense of longer-form topics which are gaining popularity.

What do you do if telehealth becomes the primary mode of care in case management?
Many organizations with world-class reputations for customer service, such as Ritz-Carlton, have guides that detail ideal customer interactions, and systems to measure the team's performance against the ideal standard. For example, how quickly someone is greeted after walking into a lobby, what team members wear, how they smile and speak to guests. For telehealth practices, it can be helpful to provide similar guidance around video chat backgrounds, preferred microphone and camera angles, how to arrange computer screens to maximize the feeling of eye contact for patients, etc.

What do you do if your attention to detail is slipping in a healthcare management position?
A key part of managing performance is ensuring alignment around the desired outcome. If you have an employee who is not performing at the level of detail desired, I would begin by showing them the desired level of performance. Then, I would walk them through how their performance falls short of the standard. Next, I would help them understand the consequences of missing the standard for the team and patients. After that, I would let them know the consequences for themself professionally if they cannot meet the standard. And finally, I would ask them to commit in writing to a higher level of performance and set a date to review their progress around the desired level of detail.
