I'm looking for guest writers to provide interesting takes, such as the benefits of financial therapy for post-war immigrants, or the emerging trend of Vietnamese diaspora returnees to Vietnam and the financial considerations being a factor in their decision. My first article is about resources for Vietnamese Americans to build up financial literacy, for both adults and teen/kids, as well as English- and Vietnamese-language resources that I was able to find. Top 5 Things I Saw at FinovateSpring FinovateSpring was a whirlwind of meeting new people, learning about new ideas, as well as seeing familiar faces and hearing new perspectives on old concepts. The show wrapped up last Thursday in San Francisco and I have a treasure trove of thoughts to share. Before I explain the top five things I saw and heard at FinovateSpring this year, I’ll start with a disclaimer. Because of on stage and behind-the-camera speaking obligations, I only managed to watch about half of the content. Many of my takeaways stem from conversations I had–both on and off stage. One of my favorite things about Finovate is the seasoned and diverse base of attendees who are willing to openly answer questions. That said, here are my top five takeaways from the event: GenAI is everywhere On stage: Many of the live demos centered around genAI. Each company emphasized that they were using a large language model (LLM) with guardrails to create a responsible, generative AI to save time and create efficiencies. On the networking floor: While conversations surrounding genAI were generally positive, some people were more bearish on the topic, expressing concerns that human-in-the-loop does not offer enough accountability and that AI needs to be responsibly integrated into workplace organizational structures so that we do not eliminate all lower level employees. I learned that everyone has an opinion on the matter, but nobody can offer any accurate prediction on future applications of AI in financial services. Third party risk management in BaaS On stage: With all of the drama in the BaaS space, there was a lot to talk about when it comes to third party risk management. Much of the discussion centered around properly vetting third party providers, creating open and transparent communication between third parties and the bank, and having a clear exit plan for when the third party ceases operation. On the networking floor: A lot of folks were talking about the Synapse bankruptcy case and the potential implications its collapse may have on For Benefit Of (FBO) accounts and BaaS in general. While some said that the FBO model is risky, others said that the issue lies in middleman providers such as Synapse, Unit, and Treasury Prime, and that BaaS will remain unharmed. Future of regulatory constraints On stage: Many speakers and panelists brought up the topic of regulation, as multiple fintech subsectors of fintech are dealing with volatile regulatory environments. During the panels and presentations, most speakers shared a positive outlook on the regulatory environment in the U.S. On the networking floor: Similar to the speakers, many folks I spoke with on the networking floor had positive things to say about the U.S. regulatory environment. Even when discussing consent orders related to BaaS, the emphasis of these discussions centered around future proofing third party relationships and maintaining open communication with regula...

Recently took on the challenge of building an app from scratch using a new tech stack by leaning into ChatGPT. This WSJ headline sponsored by: Commercial real estate and all of the long-term property ownership and lease obligations held by large firms. The shift in the post-pandemic-lockdown labor market from employees to employers holding the power, paired with property obligations on corporate balance sheets, is what is driving this emboldened posture from AWS and others. The rhetoric about employees being less effective at home vs. in the office is >utter horseshit<. There are certain roles, in junior team members learning from more experienced colleagues in specific roles, that benefit from proximity, but the majority of knowledge workers 'work alone together'. They go from home to the office, where they sit in their office or cubicle and do primarily individual work, with occasional collaborative events like meetings. In many cases, there is value LOST in commuting to work alone vs. working alone remotely. Numerous studies showed actual increases in productivity working remotely including from the World Economic Forum (https://lnkd.in/gKsfZcfh). It gives employees back commute time to dedicate to work, while not stressing about childcare and other obligations. It causes less emissions from commute vehicles. It saves employees money on fuel or mass transit. I've managed local teams and global teams. I've managed teams all in one office and in locations spanning (at one point) nine time zones. Team cohesion and productivity isn't magically created by proximity. It's created by having alignment and a shared vision for what you want to achieve. Modern collaboration tools have made it far easier to offset the lack of physical proximity. The one thing I would say is that having everyone on your team get together annually for alignment, strategic planning, and the 'forced fun' team dinners (so everyone can have a drink, let their guard down, and build trust) is a must. Once or twice a year minimum, you need everyone face to face. Other than that, the only reason to demand that people work in the same physical office is a) the company is long commercial real estate, b) you have bad/junior managers who don't know how to manage distributed teams, and/or c) you want to lay people off without severance by having them self-select out of the RTO mandate. But don't sugar coat it under the guise of productivity, because it's not.

Watching Professor Girotra talk about recent developments in Chinese companies using GenAI and putting that in perspective with what we learn from Western companies, it’s exciting to see the technology’s potential being explored from different angles. Take a look at Kling, the GenAI tool that Kuaishou (a company comparable to TikTok) built to allow its users to generate videos up to two minutes long with a resolution of 1080p / 30 fps. Growing up in San Jose, California, which was simultaneously in the heart of the emerging Silicon Valley, but also a burgeoning population of Vietnamese Americans, there was an interesting pattern I noticed, a pattern of repetition within different businesses that allowed them to scale. I wanted to document them here, as a nod to community history, and how they all shaped my perceptions about the fundamentals of scaling: franchising, wholesaling, platforming, and training-the-trainer.

If you call me on my mobile phone without caller ID information, you will get screened by Google on my Pixel. If you do not follow the instructions, say why you are calling, and hang up, you will be reported as Spam. Google uses this information to crowdsource information about incoming numbers. The next time that number is received by a Pixel, it will display as "Suspected Spam". This is a great service from Google. And, it's to be rolled out to all Androids in the next major release, as negotiated by Samsung (Google is adding some items previously reserved for Pixels and Samsung is adding some items previously reserved for Samsung mobiles -- it's a win-win). Take this as a PSA if you are a LinkedIn user that cold-calls people. If you have Caller ID and I don't recognize or expect it you will get screened by the software. There have been some legitimate calls I have screened and as they leave the information as requested, I tell the software to connect me, and then we have a conversation.
