    Abstract:
In the United States, there are over 142 million people over the age of 40 with vision disabilities. This is despite $14.5 billion being spent annually on vision care. Over 60% of U.S. counties do not have ophthalmologists, and 24% do not have ophthalmologists or optometrists. Given this context, what role can telemedicine and artificial intelligence (AI) play in reducing costs and increasing access to vision care? Teleophthalmology could allow eye exams to be performed virtually anywhere, while advancements in AI have produced deep learning algorithms able to predict eye diseases with expert-level accuracy. This paper analyzes the costs and benefits of three alternatives to the current vision screening policy in the United States: in-person eye exams, remote eye exams and AI-based eye exams.

Co-founder Jorge Soto was inspired by his aunt, who was diagnosed with advanced lung cancer. But Jorge and his colleagues believe they have developed a technology that can detect very specific types of cancer in only 60 minutes, using a smartphone.
