“I worked with Adam at LinkedIn in the international team for about a year. He combines those skills that are hard to find in one package. He is really smart, technical, strategic, proactive and very good at communicating complicated subjects in an easy to understand way. He can manage and roll up his sleeves to code. His attitude towards work is awesome. I always found it easy to work with him. He is driven to find the right balance between the technically perfect and the practical and sellable solution. I would love to work with him again in the future and highly recommend Adam.”

Quick Deploy: a distributed systems approach to developer productivity
LinkedIn Engineering Blog
This describes the Quick Deploy project. Basically, we set up a data center running the latest code for all services in the LinkedIn stack. Engineers locally deploy the services they are modifying. They integrate these services with the other services running in the data center, and can avoid all the time it takes to deploy the whole stack. This was a major productivity win for the engineering organization.

LAN-based LXI instrument systems--the next step in the evolution of measurement system technology
Proceedings of the IEEE Instrumentation and Measurement Technology 2008
This paper describes how time-synchronization and peer-to-peer messages can be combined to create fast, reliable electronic test and measurement systems.

The Power of Higher-Order Composition Languages in System Design
PhD Dissertation, UC Berkeley
This paper shows how a composition language that permits higher-order components, or components parameterized by other components, can be used to give succinct descriptions of large components. It shows the practical application of this via a programming language Ptalon. It proves the succinctness claim formally using a calculus I defined to model composition languages.

A constructive fixed-point theorem and the feedback semantics of timed systems
Workshop on Discrete Event Systems 2006
This paper generalizes metric spaces and Banach's fixed-point theorem to extend the class of dynamic systems that can simulated without spending an infinite amount of computation time simulating a finite amount of model time.

Control Algorithms for Soft Walls
Master's Report, UC Berkeley
This paper describes an algorithm that can prevent a pilot from entering restricted airspace, without taking control of the aircraft away from the pilot. The algorithm is based on the solution to a partial differential equation (PDE) that encapsulates the "worst case" set of trajectories the aircraft may follow. The PDE is computed offline, and the optimal control algorithm is derived from this PDE in real time using a lookup table.

Deblurring subject to nonnegativity constraints when known functions are present, with application to object-constrained computerized tomography
IEEE Transactions on Medical Imaging
This paper shows how computed tomography (CT) images can be constructed when man-made metal objects are present. Such objects distort CT images constructed with traditional algorithms. This paper demonstrates that when the shape and composition of the metal object is known, an algorithm that alternatively estimates the image and the metal object's position, will converge on an undistorted CT image, even with the metal object present.

Form-based user interface tool for specifying time-based, distributed algorithms for distributed systems
Issued US 7792781
This patent describes a user interface for specifying a program that will run on a distributed system. It applies to distributed systems where the components synchronize their clocks. A user can specify the time and device for which each action should occur. Code is generated and deployed to the entire system from such a specification.
