More on the AI front: OpenAI has partnered with Hearst in a content agreement, permitting the use of Hearst's newspapers and magazines to train its products, including ChatGPT. Get ready to experience ChatGPT citations and direct links to Hearst content, ensuring transparency and accessibility to original stories. Hearst, a renowned publisher with over 40 newspapers and 20 magazines, will receive compensation as part of the agreement. We often say that the term "brand" represents "a promise made and a promise kept." What we mean is, a great brand embodies the commitment it makes to its audiences—the expectations it sets, and most importantly, how it fulfills those expectations consistently over time. Omnicom disclosed a 1.1% decline in PR revenue during the first quarter of 2024, marking the third consecutive quarterly setback for the group. In Q1, the performance of Omnicom PR Group, which encompasses FleishmanHillard Ketchum and Porter Novelli was weaker compared to the holding company’s other divisions, which experienced revenue growth, including advertising & media (7%), precision marketing (4.3%), experiential (9.5%), and healthcare (2%). New: The bulk of Google's historic adtech antitrust trial wrapped up last week. Now thoughts turn to what remedies the judge might impose, should she rule against the tech giant. The DOJ and 17 state attorneys general are seeking a breakup of the company. But a brute-force spinoff could "cripple" publishers, according to Richard Kramer and Rocco Strauss at Arete Research. They make the case for instead turning Google's Network ad business into a public-benefit corporation, with capped fees and no ties to the Google mothership. With the growing use of principal media, a new report from the Association of National Advertisers examines the practice and reminds marketers to closely monitor their contracts with agencies to ensure as much transparency as possible. Greg James, CEO of Havas Media Network North America, highlights Havas' unique approach to principal media: “Havas’ principal-based buying solution, HVP, was created to differentiate itself from other agency holding company offerings in a few key ways — transparency, media quality and flexibility. The really interesting bit in here is how Vox Media is going to use GenAI through this partnership with OpenAI on Forte, their first party data platform, and Concert, their publisher-led premium advertising marketplace. There was already some really smart dynamic segmentation and also smart creative optimization using ML in those platforms, but will be super interesting to see how they use the capabilities of LLMs here to advance that. Obviously there will be plenty of really interesting newsroom and UX applications of AI in media, but I love to see organizations experimenting with the revenue generating applications that may quietly make the most meaningful impact on the business.

Tyler Goldberg, director of political strategy at Assembly Global, recently spoke to Kendra Barnett at The Drum about the record breaking $12bn that is predicted to be spent on political advertising this cycle and its larger effect on the media market. The TL;DR: “there are all of these secondary and tertiary effects of having people watching $12bn worth of political ads,” Tyler explains. “So if you’re a commercial advertiser and you do not have a plan for analyzing how political [ad spend] is going to affect your Q3 and Q4, you’re not operating with the most information. That’s why it’s so important to work alongside folks who understand the political landscape.” But at Assembly, we understand that different brands, industries, and clients need individualized strategies to navigate this market. And as The Drum notes, "Goldberg’s team at Assembly Global has built out a model that can predict the intensity of political advertising in a given market.
