While this strategy can draw a lot new subscribers quickly, it can also cause a lot of headaches for companies in the long run like unsustainable customer acquisition costs, the potential for high churn rates and a brand that's associated with significant discounts.
Try before you buy. The freemium model allows customers to see the value of products and as they experience more, they may be drawn toward upgrading. While it may not be paid right away, a freemium model can be an important part of a monetization mix.
