Did you know that approximately 1 in 4 people 🌍live with a #MentalHealth condition, with a treatment gap as high as 90% in some countries? NEW POLICY: USAID has long supported initiatives that increase access to mental health services. The Agency now elevates this commitment with the launch of a Mental Health Position Paper, USAID’s first policy document related to the integration of mental health into our programs. The Position Paper signals our strong commitment to addressing mental health in development programming, recognizing the central role that mental health plays in advancing the Agency's mission regarding inclusive international development. Positive mental health allows people to more readily cope with stressors and adapt to change. At scale, mental adaptiveness translates into stronger, more resilient communities. In this way, elevating mental health throughout USAID is another way of putting into practice our Agency's mission of advancing a free, peaceful, and prosperous world. Sometimes, our day-to-day responsibilities and administrative tasks can leave us feeling disconnected from the bigger picture. And sometimes opportunities come our way that remind us of what we’re working toward. This past March, ZemiTek’s Kathleen O’Donnell Burrows had one of those experiences. As a member of the ZemiTek team contracted to support USAID's Inclusive Development Hub, she had the opportunity to travel to Colombia and see firsthand the impact of the work she supports. During her travels, Kathleen met with organizational leaders and participants of very meaningful activities, including USAID’s Weaving Lives and Hope and Helping Survivors Heal (HSH). In Colombia, the journey towards lasting peace and reconciliation is ongoing, and initiatives like Weaving Lives and Hope are pivotal in supporting this path. Through this program implemented by the International Organization for Migration (IOM), USAID collaborates with conflict survivors, communities, and the Colombian Government to foster inclusive development and peace. Utilizing community-based interventions and multi-sector partnerships, the activity enhances access to mental health services, assists communities in processing trauma, and works to empower conflict survivors. The activity also strengthens civil society organizations' capacities and engages marginalized populations across various regions of Colombia. During her trip, Kathleen traveled to various regions alongside government officials in efforts to collaboratively improve access to and quality of mental health services. Kathleen was able to hear from community members on how the activity has helped them rebuild trust as they heal from conflict. Similarly, the global Helping Survivors Heal program implemented by the Center for Victims of Torture (CVT) is dedicated to expanding torture survivors’ access to quality, evidence-informed care through supporting the capacity development of 12 local organizations, two of which are located in Colombia. Kathleen was able to meet with these local partners and learn how the program is enhancing their organizational sustainability, improving the quality of their Mental Health and Psychosocial Support services, and strengthening their ability to evaluate the effectiveness of their services including through systematized feedback from participants to inform the organization’s programming. All in all, Kathleen’s trip served as a powerful reminder of the transformative impact of inclusive programming that places people at its core and diligently works towards building trust.
