Scientists have built the first complete wiring diagram of an entire brain - powered by AI and 3D tech. Even though it’s a fly brain, it’s still a big step forward for neuroscience. Why? ↳ Flies and humans are more alike than you might think. We share 60% of our DNA, and our brains work in similar ways. ↳ This discovery gives us a new starting point to understand not just fly brains, but all brains - including our own. Researchers will use this information to find new answers about how brains work. 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝘁 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗽𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗯𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗺𝗮𝗽𝘀? Previous maps focused on simpler organisms, like C. elegans, a tiny worm with just 302 neurons. Larval fruit fly brains have also been mapped in the past - with about 3,000 neurons. But this project, launched by the FlyWire Consortium, maps the brain of the common fruit fly, which has 139,000 neurons and 50 million synapses! 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗲𝘅𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗱? ↳ It all started with collecting 21 million images of fruit fly brains. ↳ AI was put to use to align these images which were then turned into 3D reconstructions of individual neurons. ↳ As we know, we can’t trust AI to deliver 100% accurate information, so hundreds of researchers and citizen scientists worldwide joined forces to proofread this 3D model - a task that would have taken one person 33 years to complete! This map is already leading to new discoveries. For example, over 4,500 neurons have been identified that were previously unknown to science. What’s next? While this achievement marks a significant milestone, it's important to recognize it as a starting point rather than a conclusion. Compared to a fly brain - which is less than 1 millimeter wide - pales in comparison to the complexity of the human brain. However, FlyWire's success demonstrates the potential of this approach and instills confidence in tackling more ambitious projects. The next goal? Mapping the wiring diagram of a whole mouse brain. And one day, as technology advances, we might even be able to map the human brain. Do you want a seat at the table with Nobel laureates, CEOs and scientists at the forefront of exponential technology? ↳ At XPANSE, November 20-22, you can network with 2,500 global leaders, decision-makers and the world’s biggest trailblazers in exponential tech. Could mushrooms be used to charge your phone? 🍄 Scientists are now using carbon filaments from mushrooms in supercapacitors. ↳ This is not just an exciting development for your electronic devices, but for our planet as well! 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗶𝗴 𝗱𝗲𝗮𝗹? Traditionally, carbon-based materials have been used in energy storage. These are made from fossil fuels, which are anything but eco-friendly. But with mushrooms we can use fungal filaments and convert them into carbon. This lessens our reliance on fossil resources. Carbon filaments are actually very similar to batteries in that they store electrical energy via the separation of positive and negative charges on its electrodes. These electrodes typically consists of porous carbon material. The great thing about fungi is that they naturally have a very small fiber structure which is perfect for supercapacitors. Here’s what’s so cool about fungi: → When fungi grow in environments rich in metals and inorganic salts, they’re like little sponges, soaking up those elements and weaving them into their fiber structure. → That means we can grow fibers that, thanks to the metals, are now conductive. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀? Working with biological organisms, like mushrooms, makes it hard to get consistent results. Nature is unpredictable, so each mushroom or material grown from it can vary in small but significant ways, making it difficult to repeat experiments with precision. This lack of consistency requires extra effort to get reliable scientific data. In simple terms: nature likes to throw in some wildcards. Unlike machines that can crank out the same result every time, biological organisms are a bit more unpredictable. Each mushroom can behave slightly differently, so scientists have to work extra hard to ensure their findings are accurate. 𝗠𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆... Fungi doesn’t stop at energy storage. They could be used in industries where foam-like materials are needed: → packaging, acoustic or thermal insulation, production of enzymes, removal of lignin from wood, membranes for water purification, textiles, water-repellent coatings, wound dressings, paper, and even plastic sheets! P.S.: Do you want a seat at the table with Nobel laureates, CEOs and scientists at the forefront of exponential technology? ↳ At XPANSE, November 20-22, you can network with 2,500 global leaders, decision-makers and the world’s biggest trailblazers in exponential tech. Precision Neuroscience has developed the 𝗟𝗮𝘆𝗲𝗿 7 𝗖𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗮𝗰𝗲, a brain implant that's thinner than a strand of human hair. This device could help patients with paralysis using neural signals to interact with digital devices. ↳ For example, people with severe diseases like ALS will be able to move cursors and type on a computer. ↳ That means they will be able to engage and integrate more easily into society using computer and mobile devices. 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸? A surgeon makes a very thin slit into the skull, where the implant can be slid in. The implant rests on the brain's surface, avoiding the need to penetrate brain tissue, unlike conventional methods. Despite its minimal invasiveness, it effectively decodes neural signals, allowing for precise control of digital devices. 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝘂𝗰𝗵 𝗮 𝗯𝗶𝗴 𝗱𝗲𝗮𝗹? → Traditional brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) can be invasive, often requiring penetration into brain tissue. This takes a lot of time and often involves risk of infection. ↳ Precision’s solution avoids that. With its minimally invasive procedure, the device can be implanted without the same risks as other implants. There's not even a need to shave any hair. → This is a massive step forward in brain-computer interface technology. ↳ By reducing the risk of tissue damage, it could make BCI technology more accessible to a wider range of patients.
