Join us in congratulating the honorees from our recent virtual Open Board Meeting: Volunteer Champion of the Year Chef Cristina Martinez and Advocacy Champion of the Year Arianne Bracho! Cristina Martinez is a talented chef from Capulhuac, Mexico who came to the United States fleeing domestic violence. In addition to running two highly successful Philadelphia restaurants, South Philly Barbacoa and Casa Mexico, Cristina volunteers at our Dish It Up chef competition and fundraiser and is a dedicated immigration activist. Arianne Bracho is an actor, producer, director and teacher originally from Caracas, Venezuela. With a driving passion to empower women, she is the Executive Director of Centro Integral de la Mujer Madre Tierra (CIMMT), a community-based media project promoting gender equality for all women, and eliminating violence for Hispanic and immigrant women. It takes the entire community to prevent intimate partner violence. We are so thankful to partners like Cristina and Arianne who are leading the way! #VolunteerAppreciation #advocacy #DomesticViolenceAwareness #philadelphia

Art is a powerful form of advocacy, especially for survivors of abuse. We’re so grateful to artist Natasha Zeta for creating beautiful works of art and bringing our community of anti-abuse advocates together for her Point of Entry exhibit. Advocates from Women Against Abuse joined Natasha recently for the opening reception. We were moved by the powerful portraits painted on pieces of broken mirror, so that viewers could see themselves in every story. Thank you Natasha! Point of Entry is on display at the Cherry Street Pier’s Walls for Justice Gallery from now until July 7, 2024. We hope you’ll check it out! #art #domesticviolenceawareness #adcvocacy #empowerment

NEW: Taking guns out of the hands of abusers is a common sense law that saves lives. Especially here in Philadelphia, where 87% of the 30 people who lost their lives to domestic violence in 2023 were killed with guns. We're glad the Supreme Court agreed in today's ruling in United States vs. Rahimi. Learn more about today's ruling from the National Domestic Violence Hotline: https://lnkd.in/eGwEA2wX #DomesticViolenceAwareness #GunViolenceAwareness #SupremeCourt #CaseUpdate #law

The 2024 Dish It Up Women Chef Competition took place last week! 💜 Rebecca Foxman of Fox & Sons Fair Food won the Purple Dish Award, and Kate Hughes of High Street Philly (High Street Hospitality Group) took home the Purple Dessert Award. 💜 PECO received the Dish It Up Advocate of the Year Award. 💜 We watched a moving Survivor Story by Chanda Mobley, a former client who has since become an anti-violence advocate. And thanks to your generosity, we raised over $250,000 toward our life-saving services. We are so grateful to everyone who came and made it a night to remember! #DishItUp #DomesticViolenceAwareness #advocacy #philly #restaurants

Congratulations are in order! During last night's Dish It Up Chef Competition, Rebecca Foxman of Fox & Sons Fair Food and Kate Hughes of High Street Philly took home the Purple Dish Award and Purple Dessert Award respectively. Rebecca's savory buttermilk funnel cake with pickled shrimp salad and Kate's blueberry dill cheesecake wowed our celebrity judging panel and attendees alike. You can taste Rebecca and Kate's culinary creativity for yourself when you visit Fox & Sons at Reading Terminal Market and High Street Hospitality Group's restaurant and bakery on 101 S. 9th Street. Congrats to the winners, and many thanks to all the chefs who delivered exquisite culinary creations in this year's competition. For 16 years, Dish It Up has brought together our city's best women chefs and anti-abuse advocates for an important cause: to empower survivors of intimate partner violence in Philadelphia. This year's competition is over, but you can still get involved. Check out the comments to learn more! #congratulations #DishItUp #ChefCompetition #philadelphia

“When communities come together to support victims and raise awareness, they create a network of strength and solidarity.” This weekend, our Executive Director & President Joanna Otero Cruz stopped by Chucks and Pearls, a fundraiser for nonprofits Voz Colectiva and Love Shouldn't Hurt. She discussed the prevalence of intimate partner violence and how each of us can be a voice against violence (hint: call your legislator!). Many thanks to Philadelphia City Councilmember-turned-advocate against abuse Maria Quiñones-Sánchez and her former campaign manager Monica Parilla for the invitation and for creating this event. #AdvocacyInAction #DomesticViolenceAwareness #community
