About us
WCS stands for wildlife and wild places. As the world’s premier wildlife conservation organization, WCS has a long track record of achieving innovative, impactful results at scale. We run programs spanning the entire ocean and more than 3 million biologically critical square miles in nearly 60 countries. We build on a unique foundation: Our reach is global; we discover through best-in-class science; we protect through work on the ground with local and indigenous people; we inspire through our world-class zoos, aquarium, and education programs; and we leverage our resources through partnerships and powerful policy influence. Our nearly 4,000 diverse, passionately committed team members in New York City and around the world work collectively to achieve our conservation mission.

Great news! We just deployed 7 acoustic recorders as part of a NYSERDA-funded New York Bight (NYB) passive acoustic monitoring project. We are monitoring for whale and ocean noise within the NYB offshore wind lease areas. What we learn will help with management decisions.

LISTEN: The radiated tortoise is beautiful—high-arching shell with a sunburst pattern. That beauty has made them attractive to the illegal pet trade. On #WCSWildAudio this week, hear from Bronx Zoo experts Kevin Torregrosa and Dr. Susie Bartlett, who are helping Critically Endangered species on the ground in Madagascar. 🔊 https://apple.co/45MNzht

Nature-based carbon credits are a powerful tool to achieve net-zero emissions, but time is of the essence. We are joining forces with American Forest Foundation, Conservation International, Environmental Defense Fund, Fauna & Flora , and The Nature Conservancy to call on Science Based Targets initiative to include 5 key guardrails in its review of how carbon credits are used for Scope 3 emissions abatement. 🌿 Our letter stresses how, with proper science- and evidence-based guardrails, carbon credits will speed, not hinder, climate progress at a global scale. https://bit.ly/3xu8kSx

We are excited to be participating in the IUCN Africa Conservation Forum (ACF) in Nairobi, Kenya, under the theme, African Solutions for Nature and People—Creating Transformative Responses to the Biodiversity and Climate Crisis in Africa. We look forward to sharing our work in conserving and managing some of Africa’s largest protected areas and connecting with other stakeholders in biodiversity conservation from Africa and beyond. The IUCN Regional Conservation Forum is one of the leading platforms for sharing knowledge, building partnerships, and connecting key stakeholders in nature and biodiversity conservation from different regions. #IUCNAfrica2024 #ConservationForum #StrongerTogether #ACF2024
