Exciting developments in women’s health research! We’re thrilled to see WHAM Collaborative member Dr. Jennifer Garrison featured in The New York Times, sharing her expertise on using ovarian function as a model for aging research – a unique and crucial aspect of women's health research. Key Highlights: 📉 Extending ovarian function could improve health, and the ovaries provide a unique model for aging and longevity research. “If you don’t think about ovarian function during aging,” says Dr. Garrison, “then you’re kind of missing the boat.” 🔍 Dr. Garrison states, “If we can understand why ovaries age prematurely and what’s driving that, it will almost certainly tell us something important about aging in the rest of the body,” benefiting both females and males. 🧬 The article also highlights ARPA-H's involvement in this groundbreaking research, showcasing the potential of this agency to accelerate discoveries in longevity science. Let’s continue to support and celebrate these innovative efforts in women's health research! Autoimmune diseases affect as many as 50 million Americans—4 out of every 5 of those people are women. Yet, women often face delayed diagnoses and inadequate treatments due to a one-size-fits-all medical approach. I’m proud to highlight an important article by the Katz Institute for Women's Health at Northwell Health featuring insights from our esteemed partners: Dr. Jill Kalman, M.D. Kalman of Northwell Health and Dr. Erica Ollmann Saphire of the La Jolla Institute for Immunology. Their work underscores the critical need for tailored research in women’s health. At WHAM (Women's Health Access Matters), we are dedicated to funding research that addresses these disparities. This article is a powerful reminder of why our mission is so vital. We’re thrilled to see our work and the efforts of our founder, Carolee Lee, recognized by Let's Talk Women. Did you know it's been 30 years since the National Institutes of Health Revitalization Act of 1993 mandated the inclusion of women and minorities in all NIH-funded clinical trials? Yet, less than 11% of the NIH budget is allocated to women's health research. Our #3Not30 initiative aims to change this disparity over the next three years. Thank you, Let's Talk Women, for highlighting this crucial work and to Senator Amy Klobuchar for your support. Together, we can close the gender health gap and ensure women's health research receives the attention and funding it deserves. #WomensHealth #WHAMnow #3Not30 #HealthEquity
As we prepare for our next event: Let's Talk Women's Innovation we call out the work of Women's Health Access Matters and Carolee Lee Marianne Foss-Skiftesvik for launching 3 Not 30. Did you know that it has been 30 YEARS since the National Institutes of Health Revitalization Act of 1993 established guidelines that women and minorities should be included in all clinical trials and research that were funded by the NIH? Still, less than 11% of the NIH budget covers women's health research. Let's use the next 3 years to change that.
