As a 25-year-old from a small, rural town in deep East Texas, I didn’t have the same opportunities as my peers when it came time for college. Despite working full-time and maintaining good grades, I was denied entry into my dream university’s nursing program due to a lack of service hours. My fiancé and I moved to Central Texas, where he enlisted in the Army, and I found hope at Central Texas College. During orientation, I learned about free schooling for military spouses through Workforce Solutions of Central Texas. The Wrenches to Wheels program continues to make a significant impact, now with expanded partnerships with United Way of Central Texas and Baylor Scott & White McLane Children’s Medical Center. Program Overview and New Partnerships: Wrenches to Wheels equips middle school students with essential life skills through the engaging, hands-on experience of building bicycles (plus, they get to keep the bikes!). This summer, students from Academy ISD, Belton ISD, Cameron ISD, and Gatesville ISD participated in this transformative program. Partnership Highlights: United Way of Central Texas: Providing financial support to ensure students build and own their bikes, highlighting the community’s role in nurturing young talent. Baylor Scott & White Health McLane Children’s Medical Center: Introducing a vital bicycle safety component, with students receiving bike helmets and safe riding instruction. Impact: Students gain mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and confidence. This program prepares them for future technical careers and emphasizes safety and community support. Thank you to our partners and mentors for making this initiative possible.
