In partnership with the Jackson County Green Energy Park, students had the opportunity to watch and participate in a live glassblowing demonstration as part of the Project-Based Learning laboratory exercises for ET 141. A huge thank you to glass artist Cole Johnson and studio technician Kevin McNiff, both WCU alums connected with JCGEP, for hosting these amazing sessions. #wcuengineering #wcuconstructionmanagement #wcucet #kimmelschool #expandingengineering #gocats

A heartfelt thank you to Scarlett Kitts, Site Civil Engineer at Black & Veatch specializing in dams, and Susan Habina-Woolard, Town Engineer for Matthews, N.C., for visiting WCU this week to share their expertise and experience with our students and faculty! They provided valuable insights into professional engineering licensure (PE) through presentations centered on the licensure process, examinations, continuing education requirements, and the crucial "whys" behind the PE credential. They also led an engaging session as guest speakers at a WCU SWE Society of Women Engineers event. We’re grateful for their support and commitment to shaping the next generation of engineers! #wcuengineering #wcuconstructionmanagement #wcucet #kimmelschool #expandengineering #gocats Learn more about WCU CET at https://lnkd.in/ecwHkbQe.

We are excited to share that Julie (Miller) Denesha has joined the WCU Division of Advancement as director of development and corporate partnerships for the College of Engineering and Technology. She brings valuable experience and a love for WCU to the role, and looks forward to working with our partners and supporters. Welcome, Julie! Here's an excerpt from the announcement: “I am grateful for the opportunity to join the team and work beside Randy Collins and the tremendous faculty, staff and students in the College of Engineering and Technology,” Denesha said. “With my love for Western Carolina and as someone who is passionate about the transformative power of education, I look forward to collaborating with our alumni and external stakeholders to ensure WCU continues to push boundaries and affect the region in a positive way." After ranking expansion of its engineering programs as its top legislative priority, WCU received $95.3 million for a new engineering building from the North Carolina General Assembly in the 2023-2025 biennial state budget and another $3.5 million in recurring funds to expand programming in the College of Engineering and Technology. “With the generous state funding that has been provided to WCU to meet increasing demand for high-quality engineering professionals across the state and region, Julie is joining us at an exciting time for our college and our university,” said Randy Collins, dean of the College of Engineering and Technology. #wcuengineering #wcuconstructionmanagement #wcucet #kimmelschool #expandingengineering #gocats https://lnkd.in/e8tGN8m2

This year marks the seventh consecutive year that engineering students and the Rapid Center have served as partners on the WCU Staff Senate annual ornament project, which raises money for scholarships. The 2024 WCU Staff Senate ornament is now on sale and engineering students with support from the Rapid Center were part of the project from design to product delivery. Drew J., a senior mechanical engineering student, won the ornament design contest last spring with a design he and a fellow student came up with after reflecting on what resonated with them as WCU students and with Western North Carolina: hiking in the mountains. The design featured a hiking boot print and incorporated a Catamount and the WCU logo. Then, Alex B., a senior engineering technology student, finalized the design, used lasers to cut out and engrave the ornaments, and analyzed the process for efficiency to meet project deadlines. At a temporary forge set up right here on campus for three days of demonstrations and materials labs, students used the ancient art of blacksmithing to learn, hands-on, how the properties of steel change dramatically based on how it is heated and cooled, which is important knowledge for any engineer. We are so grateful to everyone who made this possible including the Jackson County Green Energy Park and Master Blacksmith and WCU Alumnus Brock Martin, a full-time blacksmith for 17 years and a finalist on the show Forged in Fire. Also assisting is Journeyman Jesse Bolding. The demonstrations continue today until 4 p.m. "There's no better way to really learn about a material than to come out here and actually have your hands on it. So when the students are learning about steel they come out and work with the blacksmiths who have their hands on steel every single day," said Timm Muth, assistant professor of practice, whose ET 141 Material Science students had the opportunity to work with the blacksmiths. #wcuengineering #wcuconstructionmanagement #wcucet #kimmelschool #expandingengineering #gocats
