Selena Gomez steps into the role of a lifetime with ‘Emilia Pérez.’ Gomez calls the film a “fever dream,” but it’s not as wild a leap for her as it may appear. The Emmy nominee has long pursued supporting roles in unconventional, sometimes risqué work by auteurs, like Harmony Korine’s ‘Spring Breakers’ or Jim Jarmusch’s ‘The Dead Don’t Die.’ “That’s intentional,” she says. ‘Emilia Pérez’ is almost entirely in Spanish, and though Gomez grew up speaking Spanish, she lost fluency as years went by. “Speaking it is not too terrible for me, but I’m not fluent. I would say that I’m okay. I got my first job, and everything was English-dominated.” In her VF cover story, Gomez reflects on her relationship to her Hispanic heritage, her history-making Emmy nomination, and her love for her ‘Only Murders in the Building’ costars. Selena Gomez has long been vocal about her journey with lupus, but now she’s opening up about the chronic autoimmune disease’s impact on her plans for a family. “I unfortunately can’t carry my own children. I have a lot of medical issues that would put my life and the baby’s in jeopardy. That was something I had to grieve for a while,” she tells VF. Gomez is open to adopting, she tells VF, citing her own mother’s adoption story: “She and I are very thankful for how life played out.” Regardless of her challenges, Gomez is optimistic about motherhood. “I’m excited for what that journey will look like, but it’ll look a little different,” she says. “At the end of the day, I don’t care. It’ll be mine. It’ll be my baby.” The VF cover star discusses her desire to start a family, her relationship with Benny Blanco, and whether she’d change her last name after marriage. Sabrina Carpenter taps into the candid energy that fans have long embraced in her music with her new album ‘Short n’ Sweet.’ “The songs that really resonated with people were closest to my truest personality—in its silliest, most fun form or its most raw and vulnerable…. That gave me all the confidence to tap into myself a lot deeper,” Carpenter tells VF of her latest release. “I feel very much myself again, even in the moments where I’m nervous about the future. There’s a lot more uncertainty, which is fun to write because there’s a lot of what-ifs in that.” Read VF’s full conversation with the “Espresso” singer: https://lnkd.in/e59QrqTR

Exclusive: ‘Rust’ director Joel Souza, who was wounded during the on-set shooting that killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, finally tells his devastating story about the fatal accident. “When I tell someone it ruined me, I don’t mean in the sense that people might generally think,” Souza tells VF in his first interview about the shooting. “I don’t mean that it put my career in ruins. I mean, internally, the person I was just went away. That stopped.” In the emotional interview, the director mourns Hutchins’s loss, unpacks his complicated relationship with Alec Baldwin, and discusses his reluctant return to finish the movie.
