About us

The Department of Defense (DoD) activated U.S. Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) April 16, 1987, at MacDill Air Force Base, Florida. DoD created the new unified command in response to congressional action in the Goldwater-Nichols Defense Reorganization Act of 1986 and the Nunn-Cohen Amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act of 1987. Congress mandated a new four-star command be activated to prepare Special Operations Forces (SOF) to carry out assigned missions and, if directed by the president or secretary of defense (SECDEF), to plan for and conduct special operations.

In honor of Suicide Awareness and Prevention Month, we're proud of SO/LIC teammates addressing this critical issue and honoring our fallen. Greg Howe, a former Marine Forces Special Operations Command (MARSOC) Raider, rode 400+ miles from Atlanta to Destin for the Operation One Voice memorial ride, honoring Joseph "Kap" Kapacziewski, who died in 2023. Kap, a 75th Ranger Regiment, U.S. Army vet, survived severe injuries in 2005, becoming the first Ranger to return to combat with a prosthetic leg. He completed 11 deployments, earned 3 Purple Hearts, a Bronze Star for valor, and more. Teammates, you're not alone. If you're struggling, reach out. Let's check on each other. We are glad he's part of SO/LIC's #IrregularWarfare team.

"Early in my tenure as secretary of defense, I made taking care of our people a top priority," Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III wrote in his Sept. 13 memorandum "Our Enduring Duty to America's Service Members and Their Families." Austin announced new initiatives meant to ensure the well-being and success of service members so they can better focus on their part of the defense mission. "Doing right by our all-volunteer joint force and their families is a core readiness issue. Taking care of our people is fundamental to the department's ability to recruit and retain the most talented American patriots and to ensure that the U.S. military remains the most lethal fighting force on the planet — and it is simply the right thing to do." 🇺🇸 Congratulations US Army Master Sgt. Ivan Morera from #TeamSOCOM on your selection as Invictus Team U.S. co-captain for Invictus Games Vancouver Whistler 2025! Morera exemplifies the courage and tenacity of USSOCOM as an active-duty #GreenBeret. Within 18 months of his injury, he completed his first basic static line airborne operation, followed by his first military freefall operation in 2018. Today, he stands as the only upper body amputee on MFF status and the only one-handed medic in the U.S. Armed Forces. His leadership extends beyond his own recovery, as he has been instrumental in guiding and supporting his fellow wounded, injured or ill service members and their families with SOCOM's Warrior Care Program - Care Coalition. Selection as co-captain for Team U.S. is a recognition of his contributions and commitment to the principles of resilience and recovery, which are at the heart of the #InvictusGames. #Unconquered #People #AdaptiveSports News release in comments.
