About us
The Department of Defense activated U.S. Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) April 16, 1987, at MacDill Air Force Base, Florida. The DoD created the new unified command in response to congressional action in the Goldwater-Nichols Defense Reorganization Act of 1986 and the Nunn-Cohen Amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act of 1987. Congress mandated a new four-star command be activated to prepare Special Operations Forces (SOF) to carry out assigned missions and, if directed by the president or secretary of defense, to plan for and conduct special operations.

Not your average wind tunnel! ☝️🤙✌️ Last week, U.S. Army Green Berets assigned to Special Operations Command-Korea participated in combined High Altitude High Opening (HAHO) jump proficiency training with Soldiers from ROK Special Warfare Command in a vertical wind tunnel at a training range in Icheon, Republic of Korea, Oct. 8, 2024. The controlled environment of the vertical wind tunnel enables personnel to closely evaluate and improve skills needed to conduct a HAHO jump, prior to advancing to those in rotary or fixed-wing aircraft. The HAHO jump is one of many skills that SOF personnel train to proficiency in order to conduct various special operations missions and functions. These types of jumps enable special operators to infiltrate from high altitudes in addition to traveling significant distances from the point of exiting an aircraft to a predetermined drop zone. In 2014, the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) unleashed a reign of terror across the Middle East, threatening millions with violence, oppression, and genocide. At its height, ISIS controlled vast areas of eastern Syria and northern Iraq, including Mosul, Iraq’s second-largest city. The frontline of their advance reached perilously close to Baghdad. Today, the vast territory the Islamic State claimed has been liberated thanks in large part to the U.S.-led Defeat-ISIS coalition of nations that pioneered a new and effective way of confronting this worldwide threat. The terrorists no longer rule territory, but the ideology espoused by the group continues, said Alan Matney, DOD's coordinator for the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS, and there is still a need for the coalition. "I think if we've learned anything over the last 10 years of the coalition, then I would argue that this threat does not go away: It changes and it adapts," Matney said during an interview. "Where we are right now, is we are at a normal and healthy stage where we are adapting, too." Click to read more:

The Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS held a Defense Ministerial meeting in at NATO Headquarters in Brussels, Belgium on October 17, 2024. This year marks a decade of dedicated efforts by the Global Coalition, which has grown from a dozen members at its inception to 87 members today. Our greatest strength lies in our united response, and this coalition has achieved significant success against a formidable terrorist adversary thanks to our collective resolve and adaptability. The Defense Ministers discussed the changing global threat, evolving challenges, and advancing coalition work to decisively defeat ISIS and strengthen our cooperation against its offshoots in the Middle East and beyond. By continually adjusting our strategy, we've thwarted ISIS's resurgence. However, the threat from ISIS and other terrorist groups remains. Countering them requires continuous vigilance and a tailored whole of government approach, and we are ready to address rising threats from key affiliates together. Assistant Secretary of Defense for Special Operations and Low-Intensity Conflict Christopher P. Maier and D-ISIS and U.S. Defense Coordinator for the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS W. Alan Matney joined Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin for the meeting. Read the Secretary's opening remarks: https://lnkd.in/epAEj3_B

Today, we honor the Night Stalkers for their commitment and contributions to our nation's security. The 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (Airborne) was formed in response to the Iran Hostage Crisis in 1980. Established as Task Force 160 in 1981, this specialized aviation unit quickly became essential for high-risk, nighttime operations, pioneering night flight techniques and earning its reputation as the go-to for special operations aviation. Their expertise in night operations and ability to fly in the most challenging environments make them indispensable to #SOF and earned them the name, "#NightStalkers."
